Forecast discussion: Boston received overcast skies earlier Saturday morning, and remained this way throughout the day. Also, temperatures remained quite cool, thanks in part to an easterly wind off the ocean. Temperatures never went above 72 degrees. There may be a widely isolated shower this evening. However, as we approach a new week, we will begin to return to hot, humid weather we received a few days ago.
A strong high pressure system in the western Atlantic will slowly build in from the east, helping to strengthen an upper level high in the same area. In fact, this high will push an upper level low to the south and west, known as retrograding. To be honest, upper level or surface systems cannot go backward; this is due to the rotation of the earth. However, the high will push the low out of the way, allowing for more tropical air to return to Southern New England.
We will also see temperatures rise back into the upper 80’s and lower 90’s to start the workweek. With high humidity expected once again, we may see heat index temperatures reach the middle to upper 90’s by Tuesday, and nearly 100 before Thursday. So, if you have to be outside for an extended period of time, please make sure to take the proper precautions to avoid sunstroke and heat exhaustion.
We will not see any relief from the heat until Saturday, as a cold front is expected to help cool temperatures back into the middle 80’s. The chance for any showers or thunderstorms will not begin until Wednesday, with a possible chance at some severe weather for Thursday. We will be watching a cold front come down from the Canadian border into Southern New England. At this time, the computer models are predicting the front will make its way down into Rhode Island by early Friday morning.
