The cold front that pushed through here Wednesday afternoon will come to a stationary position just southeast of Nantucket today. Behind the front much cooler and less humid air has overspread the area. It was a pleasant night for sleeping as we could give the air conditioners a rest. Morning low temperatures were generally in the upper 50s to low 60s in metro Boston and the northern and western suburbs, mid 60s over southeast Massachusetts and Cape Cod but cooling to the 50s in central and western portions of the state. There were even some upper 40s in the Berkshires. Northward, in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, Saranac Lake was 33 degrees and nearby Lake Placid recorded a morning low of 34! What a change from the recent heat wave and oppressive humidity of late
Developing low pressure off the North Carolina coast will ride northeastward along the stalled frontal boundary and bring the area periods of rain later today through a good portion of Friday. Thursday will see the chances for rain increase as the day moves along, with a few areas getting a light shower before the main event ramps up tonight. Rain is likely through the overnight into Friday. As you move out to the Route 495 belt and west the chances for rain will diminish. The closer to the coast you are the better chance for rain. And, it will be much cooler with high temperatures in the mid to upper 60s on the coast to 70 degrees inland today, upper 60s coast to low 70s interior Friday. Lows tonight about 60 degrees. A Northeast wind will keep it particularly cool along and near the coast and could gust to about 25 mph Friday.
We should begin to see improving weather Friday night. Mostly cloudy skies and still a chance of a lingering shower, but overall the trend will be to slowly improve as we move toward morning. Lows in the low 60s for most.
As we get to the weekend the low will have lifted far enough north to allow a fair amount of sunshine on Saturday. Meanwhile, a cold front approaches from the Great Lakes. It will become increasingly more humid as well. Highs will return to summertime levels, climbing into the low and mid 80s, coolest on the shore. Expect the overnight lows to settle back into the mid and upper 60s.
With the approaching cold front comes a mostly cloudy sky on Sunday and a chance of showers and thunderstorms. High temperatures in the low 80s.
This cold front is currently forecast to move across our area on Monday, probably early rather than later in the day, and this will bring us additional opportunities for showers and storms to start to new work week.
