“The Fifth Beatle,” the graphic novel that will be the basis of an upcoming biographical film of the same name about Beatles manager Brian Epstein, will be released Nov. 19 by Dark Horse Comics’ M Press Books, producer Vivek Tiwary announced Friday. Tiwary will be signing prints of “The Fifth Beatle” at BookExpo America in New York City at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Dark Horse booth #1003.
Also at BookExpo America is Beatles author Larry Kane, whose upcoming book on the early days of the Beatles, “When They Were Boys,” was selected as one of the Buzz Books of 2012.
“Telling the Brian Epstein story is a true labor of love,” said Tiwary in making the announcement about the graphic novel. ‘The Fifth Beatle’ really is my life’s work as I’ve been researching Brian’s life for more than half my own. So it’s with great excitement and anticipation that I can finally share this little-known story about one of the great architects of modern pop culture with the rest of the world.”
The novel was drawn by Andrew C. Robinson, whose credits include books on “Dusty Star,” “King Conan,” “Starman,” and “Superman.” The grapic novel also includes a tribute to the 1960s Beatles cartoons by cartoonist Kyle Baker.
Tiwary is also writing and producing the feature film to be adapted from the graphic novel. Tiwary announced in 2011 he had made a deal with Sony/ATV to use Beatles songs in the film.
The book will be available in three versions. A standard hardcover edition will be available for $19.99. A collector’s-edition hardcover version, with a wraparound, textured cover and bonus materials including Beatles and Brian Epstein memorabilia, artist sketches, and alternate covers, will sell for $49.99.
A deluxe limited edition of 1,500 copies signed by Tiwary, Robinson and Baker, along with a bonus section with Beatles and Brian Epstein memorabilia, behind-the-scenes sketches, a textured cover and a slipcase, will sell for $99.99.
Tiwary and Robinson will also deliver a presentation, “Comics of the Fab Four: The Fifth Beatle and Beyond,” at HeroesCon in Charlotte, NC at 11:30 a.m. June 9.
