Jeff Branson made the list of nominees for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a drama series for his role as Ronan Malloy on the Young and the Restless. Just as we all thought, Jeff too, felt his time on the daytime drama had been cut far too short. It’s a Soap Opera and storylines are forever changing. However, there is more to Ronan Malloy that needs to be explored.
First of all, Ronan had a hard shell. He kind of made me think of M&M’s. You know, hard candy shell, but sweet and soft in the middle. All we knew of Ronan when he came to town was that he was a cop and pretty bitter towards practically the entire world. He had a hard time opening up and showing his more sensitive side. But eventually his layers began to peel and we saw an incredible side of Ronan that made women around the globe swoon. (Now I’m thinking of the M&M’s commercial, “Melts in your mouth, not in your hands”.) Oops!
Ronan found love. He wanted Phyllis. He went to great lengths to keep her out of jail, even though it cost Phyllis’ marriage to Nick. (Most people other than the PHICK fans thank you, Ronan!) Like Phyllis, Ronan came alive when he was with the stunning redhead. We saw fire and flames. He risked his career for this woman. He became emotional. He had wants and needs and for the first time, we saw him express himself. Not to mention that Jeff Branson and Michelle Stafford have incredible electricity between them. The chemistry is out of this world.
We learned even more about Ronan when Daniel Polo joined the cast as Jamie, the teen from a troubled home. Ronan had become Jamie’s mentor and we were just starting to explore a father-son like relationship between these two characters’. The storyline of Jamie being bullied by Summer, Fen and other kids really hit home for Jeff Branson, whom had been bullied as a kid. Jeff explains that once he became “cool”, he would often put an end to bullying.
Another relationship that was starting to bloom with Ronan was the one with his mother, Nina. We saw Ronan over and over shut his mother out, but towards the end of Jeff Branson’s contract, we saw a glimpse of potential in that mother-son relationship. With Ronan leaving town far too soon, we never got to see that relationship blossom. Unless “Nina’s” disappearance from the show these days has her visiting both Chance and Ronan, I don’t see how they could make their relationship grow with the constant disappearing acts.
Although Jeff has had no trouble finding other work, he believes that his character on the Young and the Restless has a lot of loose ends and much more to give. And it’s true. He also feels that the writers need to be passionate about a character in order to give them a great storyline. “I’m only as good as the writing,” he stated. And that is true. The writing has been fantastic since the return of Jill Farren Phelps and Josh Griffith. The storylines so far in 2013 make 2014 look like a great year yet again for them at the Daytime Emmy’s. Now if only we can get the writers to feel as passionate about the return of Ronan Malloy as the fans all are.
So, is there potential for Ronan to return to Genoa City? Certainly there is. Daniel Polo’s character, Jamie, exited the show as well to go live with Ronan permanently. Personally I am hoping for the two to come back together. Ronan can return to rescue Phyllis from her (boring) relationship with Jack and from the anger she feels towards her sister and her ex-husband, Nick. Phyllis is exactly what Ronan needs in order to completely open up and give himself fully. I’d love to see how his relationship with Jamie would play out as well. Jamie was a troubled teen and Ronan never had any of his own children. Although Ronan had good adoptive parents, he was never raised by his biological family. He has so much to offer Jamie. As layers peel from Ronan’s hard exterior, I’d love to see him and his mother begin a beautiful and loving relationship. Nina loves both of her sons so much and she really needs the opportunity to have a relationship with both of them, especially Ronan, as we haven’t seen enough of him.
I know many of the loyal fans of the Young and the Restless would love to see Jeff Branson return so that Ronan Malloy could sweep Phyllis off of her feet yet again.
