City building games that aren’t SimCity 5 offer players a chance to create a cityscape in the style that they choose based on the game’s environment. But the free flow of turning a blank environment into a bustling city is often littered with obligatory missions requiring to build X amount of decorations and buildings that look ugly as well as the passive-aggressive demands for in-game purchases to unlock premium content for these mobile games. Not even the most marketable of cartoon franchises can rescue their city building games from those issues.
G5 Games’ new city building game “Build It! Miami Beach Resort” for iOS mobile game devices lets you turn a small bungalow village set in the 20s into a bustling coastal resort city through six decades of growth and development. It is mission-based as it constantly demands X amount of buildings, but the missions are executed in a way that goes along with the game’s focus on planning ahead to keep up with the population’s demands, ensure continuous expansion, and earn enough money for the next year of city management.
Juggling between limited building permits, buildings, limited income, and maintaining other tasks can be a challenge during “Build It! Miami Beach Resort,” especially when the Miami Beach Resort staff consists of one player character doing all of the tasks. It’s a good thing she is a licensed contractor, painter, civil servant, and whatever else the city needs. Watching the one-woman working crew check off the missions of the year provides some satisfaction in getting the work done and watching the effects & design of the city carry over to the next year.
As per G5 Games’ modus operandi, “Build It! Miami Beach Resort” is a fun mobile game best played in short bursts to complete a year’s worth of city building in a few minutes. Working on the city for prolonged periods of time will eventually feel like work. Thankfully “Build It! Miami Beach Resort” does not have any crops to harvest or hour-long building construction that will make you babysit the game. And if you want to blow some steam after working hard at building your city, you can demolish it for fun with Riot Mode.
So for a city building game that challenges you to build, decorate, expand, and plan ahead to succeed to kill a few free moments of time during a busy day, G5 Games’ “Build It! Miami Beach Resort” is competent and fits the bill well. It’s not deep, but has some challenge and charm that doesn’t come from licensed cartoon franchises or the constant Internet connection needed to download patch after patch. And it’s fun upgrading and watching the city grow through the game years.
“Build It! Miami Beach Resort” is currently available from G5 Games for iPad and iPhone for free with a single in-app purchase to unlock the full game at $4.99 (iPad) or $2.99 (iPhone). These sale prices are $2 off the original and will be good until June 1.
