Sofia Vergara credits a low-carb diet and Pilates workouts for her sexy bikini body, Celebrity Health reported.
Vergara, who has a family history of diabetes, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2000. In 2001, she got surgery to remove her thyroid and underwent radioactive iodine therapy. Sofia has been cancer-free since 2002 but takes a thyroid hormone pill every day, watches her diet and works out regularly.
Sofia says getting cancer at such a young age when she led a healthy lifestyle came as a complete shock. “When it first happened, it was very scary,” she told the New York Times. “I went into shock. I was 28 and I wasn’t smoking, I wasn’t doing many things that are unhealthy.”
Sofia’s Bikini Body Fitness Secrets: Low-Carb Diet and Pilates
Vergara, who has a 21-year-old son, works out regularly and follows a portion-controlled low-carb diet. Low-carb diets promote effortless weight loss by forcing the body to burn fat for fuel, said Dr. Jeff Volek, author of The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living.
Low-carb diets prevent diabetes and cancer by reducing the blood-sugar spikes that fuel weight gain and disease, said obesity expert Dr. Eric Westman, co-author of Keto Clarity.
“Now that I’m older, I work out more,” said Sofia who exercises with a trainer, spins and does Pilates workouts. “I try to do something at least three times a week if I’m not working.
“It’s going to improve the way you look, the way you feel, the way you age, everything. If there are women out there like me who don’t love it, you have to make a conscious decision to do it if you want to age well and live longer.”
Despite being known for her smoking-hot bikini body, the Colombian bombshell hates to exercise. “For me it’s punishment,” said Sofia. “It’s my torture time. So of course I try to avoid it or make excuses [to avoid working out]. But I do try to do it at least three times a week if I’m not shooting. I wish I loved it.”
Vergara doesn’t deprive herself, but also doesn’t overeat and enjoys treats in moderation. “I’m very lucky. I love healthy eating,” Sofia said. “I love fish, I love eating vegetables, and I love salads, but I also love desserts, so I try to eat everything but in moderation.
“I try to eat healthy during the day so that when I go to dinner I can eat whatever I want. I don’t go too crazy during the week. But on the weekends, I completely order whatever I want. I especially love sushi and I love Middle Eastern food.”
