Oliva – Raise the Curtain (AFM Records 2013)
By Domonic Rini
Founder of one of rock/metal most significant prog bands that made a name for themselves as Savatage finds himself on his own solo project with a goal, to deliver the listener an opportunity to venture into his mind and lose themselves.
Oliva does not waste any time holding back his innate historical influences as his opening track “Raise the Curtain” definitely pull back everything and lets the 70’s vibe flow freely. It has that Yes sound to it. “Soul Chaser” is an upbeat track which has that eerie hard rock vibe that Savatage fans will suck up. Extremely catchy and filled with hooks and great vocals. “Ten Years” is pretty eerie/rockin song. This is one of my favorites. Gives me the old Alice Cooper vibe which is really cool. “Father Time” is sweet rocking song. Another kickback to the 70’s feeling. Has some nice break-downs in it and a very memorable solo. “I Know” is a melodic song and great lyrics. This is a song to listen to over and over again. “Big Brother” has a nice Savatage vibe throughout. Some really strong guitar riffs throughout. Song at times sounds a bit erratic but it fits well with the song. Nice soloing compliments the production of the chemistry of the song. “Stalker” has all the ingredients to make it a mainstream song and from what I hear, great lyrics, great guitar work, great production and it keeps you on the edge of your seat listening to it. “Can’t Get Away” is a relaxing track that gives you the vibe of old Pink Floyd and the Eagles with a splash of early KISS. A really smooth song that will keep you captivated.
Overall: If you have been a follower of the Oliva’s and the music trilogy that they have provided the world over the decades you will find this one as a treat. It is nice to hear the different styles that collide in this recording as being so cohesive throughout.
