Since Emme Rylan took over the role of Lulu Spencer on ‘General Hospital’, the character has been trapped in a memory loss that has had her forgetting about her family, her life and her past. Thursday, an emotional Lulu got her memory back and recognized the face she loves, her husband Dante (Dominic Zamprogna).
Viewers have missed Lulu. While some are still not over the role being played by anyone other than Julie Marie Bergman, others just aren’t feeling Rylan in the role. The writers were smart to user the actress in the role having memory loss because it gets the fans use to the actress while watching her familiarize herself with the characters she loves and reattach those feelings she lost at the hands of Stavros Cassadine. Because of the memory loss, the Lulu fans are so use to seeing hasn’t been the same. She has seemed fragile and at times clueless and has even given into the crush of Milo, who the Lulu viewers know, wouldn’t be attracted to. But that doesn’t mean the actress hasn’t been doing a great job. Rylan is a talented actress who has the challenge of filling the shoes of an Emmy-winning actress in a legacy role.
For weeks, Dante has been driving himself and Lulu crazy because the woman he loves doesn’t remember loving him. Through flashbacks, viewers were shown flashbacks of important moments between Dante and Lulu with Rylan in the scenes. The purpose was to recreate the passion for the viewers and for Lulu herself. The strategy was somewhat effective, but still a good tool to get fans use to a familiar character with a new face.
The Haunted Star has triggered brief glimpses of memory of Lulu. The fright in her eyes and the stutter in her movements every time something triggers what happened on the boat symbolized her fear of remembering her life. When she saw Dr. Kevin Collins, it was clear Lulu didn’t forget her memory, she was suppressing it.
Finally on Thursday’s episode, a hesitant Lulu opened up to Dante about her glimpses of memory. She remembered marrying Stavros on the boat. He threatened to hurt those she loved most if she didn’t agree to be his wife. He used the same threat to force Lulu into kissing him and agreeing to consummate the marriage. This angered Dante but he realized his wife was protecting her family and protecting him.
In a surprise twist, Lulu didn’t sleep with Stavros. For her dignity and for the love she has for Dante she refused and for the first time, Rylan became Lulu. She stood up to him and threw his fantasy of a marriage back in his face. But Lulu still had guilt; she told Dante that her refusal put her family in danger. It was that refusal that led to Nicholas’s shooting and it was her refusal that could’ve killed her parents and the man of her life. As Dante looked into Lulu’s eyes, he told her she was strong just like the woman he loves and that what she did by refusing was okay and saved her family. In that moment it all came back to Lulu. She recognized her life, her family and the face of her husband. Finally viewers got to see the Lulu they are familiar with. Dante and Lulu found their love again and Rylan is really starting to fit into the role.
Viewers will never forget Julie Marie Berman as Lulu but Emme Rylan is making a Lulu of her own and that’s something every good actress is worthy of. Welcome back Lulu Spencer!
