A cute Cheerios ad featuring an interracial family was forced to disable its YouTube comments section yesterday after it became inundated with barrage of racist remarks.
Those feeling the need to vent over a cereal commercial were doing so at Reddit: “Nice try Cheerios ad team! I’m never eating Cheerios again! Good day sir!!!” wrote on Redditor. Wrote another: “Shoving multi-culturism down our throats when we know it fails.”
Those weren’t the only comments. There were plenty of tongue-in-cheek racist jokes, like “should be for multi-grain Cheerios.” But the conversation cycled through everything from “Finally!” to “Who cares” to “Call me when it’s a black woman married to a white man” to “I don’t buy products based on their god d*mn social views.” And then there’s a whole discussion about why Dad wasn’t a “stereotypical” black man, whatever that means.
A marketing spokesperson for Cheerios said in a statement, “Consumers have responded positively to our new Cheerios ad. At Cheerios, we know there are many kinds of families and we celebrate them all.”
Well, for some, there’s always Special KKK cereal.
