A Cheerios commercial featuring a mixed-race family brought out a viral flurry of comments that many have found shocking. Huffington Post shared the details on May 31 of the racist flaming of the commercial, and the decision made to shut down the commenting feature on YouTube for the video as a result.
The Cheerios commercial in question shows a bi-racial little girl asking her Caucasian mom about Cheerios being healthy for the heart. The commercial then shows her African American father waking up to cheerios on him. While many are smiling at the commercial, and it received more than 1,600 “likes” on YouTube quickly, many racially-charged comments built up quickly as well.
The company’s Facebook page also was hit with controversial comments, though there are many people who clearly loved the commercial and enjoyed seeing a mixed-race family featured. Cheerios itself says it celebrates all kinds of families, and they have seen positive reactions to the commercial. The Huffington Post reporters said the comment section on YouTube quickly became a “cesspool” of racist comments before they were shut off.
While the Cheerios commercial may have triggered a number of racist comments, it also has nearly 280,000 views and more than 4,500 likes at this time. Some may be wound up over the mixed-race family being featured, but it seems that those who enjoyed the Cheerios commercial far outnumber those who dislike it.
