Thursday night Chelsea wrapped up the Asian portion of their preseason tour in Jakarta, Indonesia. The club boarded a flight to return them to London shortly after as they now prepare for their United States portion of preseason. One young forward for the club was feeling great the whole way and is looking forward to more success and opportunity according to his comments to the club’s official website on Jul. 27, 2013.
Having spent last season on loan to fellow English Premier League club West Bromwich Albion, the 20-year-old Belgian striker has grown into his talents for the Blues and he is pushing to make a move for a permanent place in the first team under new manager Jose Mourinho.
Lukakau scored 17 goals and provided four assists in a stellar season that helped Steve Clarke have a great first year in charge of the Baggies. Now, after having scored in all three of the Blues preseason fixtures in Asia, the young striker is ready to challenge both Fernando Torres and Demba Ba for his place in the first eleven:
“I’m feeling good, the team winning is the most important thing, along with the fitness.
It’s nice to score goals, but the reason I’m happy is the team has improved a lot since the start of pre-season and we’ve done better in each game we have played.
Of course I am pleased to have scored in every game. It’s a good habit and it’s nice to help the team, whether that’s with goals or assists it doesn’t matter but it’s a nice feeling.
Fitness-wide I feel good, very well, and no injuries so hopefully that will continue in the next couple of weeks. Matches are getting easier to get through, but the road is long and there is still plenty of room for improvement in the weeks to come.”
The young Belgian also has another reason to believe he will have a chance to succeed under the management of Mourinho, that being his physical approach to the game that is much like Didier Drogba.
Drogba was a major part of Mourinho’s previous time in London having signed him in 2004 as one of his first additions to the club under his first reign. Lukaku is anticipated to be the future of the club as Mourinho will undoubtedly look to make the Belgian his new target man in the coming campaign in many instances unless there is a major signing for the club in the last weeks of the transfer window.
