World Wide Knit In Public Day, an event created by founder Danielle Landes in 2005 with the intention of getting knitters out of their homes to raise awareness of the craft and network together, kicks off today throughout the globe. It is the largest knitter-run event in the world.
Chicago local yarn shops and knitting guilds are hosting several events in the area, most of which do not require registration. Participants can create a free account on the WWKIP website to search events in their area using their country, region, or state. Otherwise, here is a list of some World Wide Knit In Public events in the Chicago area in the coming week:
Chicago: The annual WWKIP event held at Millenium Park, and run by the founders of Yarn Con, is again promising to be one of the larger Chicago events, with knitters meeting in the park from noon to 5p.m. in Boeing Gallery North, located near the Cloudgate sculpture, affectionately known as “The Bean.” Knitters are encouraged to bring their own chairs.
Chicago: Sifu Design Studio in Edgewater will be knitting in public outside their store on Broadway, and neighboring Lickety Split, an ice cream and treat shop nearby, will be serving ice cream treats to patrons of the event. It kicks off at noon today.
Hillside: From 10a.m. to 3p.m. today, the Hillside Public Library, located at 405 Hillside Avenue in Hillside, will be hosting a knit-in-public event.
Fox River Grove: The Fox River Grove Memorial Library will be hosting a knit-in-public event today from 10a.m. to 3p.m.
Frankfort: Yarns to Dye For and More, a local yarn shop in downtown Frankfort, is hosting an event on Sunday from 9a.m. to 3p.m. at Breidert Green, an area just outside the store. The store will also be open during the event for knitters to purchase and start a new project if desired.
La Grange: Idea Studio in La Grange will be holding court outside their stores with knitters enjoying their craft from 10a.m. to 4p.m. today. At 11a.m. the Doings newspaper will be covering the event, so knitters are encouraged to put on their best hair and makeup in case they make it into the publication while knitting.
Saint Charles: Wool and Company in Saint Charles will be hosting their knit-in-public event on Wednesday, June 12, from 4p.m. to 7p.m., with knitters meeting on the Plaza near the downtown river walk.
If you do not see your local yarn shop or guild listed here, keep in mind this is just a sampling for the Chicago area. Contact your local yarn shop to see which events they are hosting for the week.
