While visiting Goree Island near Dakar, Senegal on Thursday, President Obama was greeted by children wearing shirts that read “Welcome home, Mr. President,” Talking Points Memo reported.
“Apparently,” one person said on Twitter, “these children haven’t received your memo about the you know what.”
A post at Naples News said signs along a highway showed Obama next to Senagalese President Macky Sall that read “Welcome Home” and the Washington Post displayed a picture of an artist finishing a sign that read, “Welcome to Senegal your home Obama.”
“I have the blood of Africa within me,” Obama said in a half-hour long address to the Ghanaian Parliament. According to the Post, Obama stood in front of a banner that read, “Yes Together We Can.”
The Post said the feeling was mutual.
“We Africans celebrated him as one of our own,” said Kenyan blogger Robert Alai.
But Mwangi Kimenyi, a Kenyan who is the director of the African Growth Initiative at the Brookings Institution, said Bill Clinton remains a hero in Africa, and doubts that Obama will achieve the respect held by Clinton.
“Africans still consider Clinton their president. If you go to Africa and mention Clinton, he is a hero, even today,” he said. “I don’t think President Obama is going to approach the level of President Clinton at all, in terms of respect, in terms of what they feel.”
Kimenyi said he detects cynicism of Obama when he goes to Africa.
“There is not that feeling that we have our son there. There’s probably more [a sense] of a prodigal son,” he added.
News of the welcome brought a chuckle to many conservatives.
“I wonder if Chris Matthews will have a segment on dog whistle words in Africa,” one reader said at Twitchy.
A post at Mr. Conservative said the tweets and messages were “especially fun” since coming on the heels of a report from Yahoo! News that said Obama would not be visiting his country of origin.
