The 67th annual Tony Awards were presented on June 9, 2013, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. As expected, top nominee “Kinky Boots” emerged as the biggest winner, taking a total of six Tonys, including best musical. (A complete list of winners can be found at the official Tony Awards website.) After the Tony winners give their acceptance speeches, they usually stop by the press room to pose for photos and do interviews. Here is what this celebrity Tony winner said in the press room.
Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play
(“The Trip to Bountiful”)
What’s the best part of performing in “The Trip to Bountiful”?
The moment I go up on the stage, to describe my inner state of mind, as soon as I open my mouth as Carrie Watts.
What did you think about the fact that there were nine African-American nominees at the Tony Awards this year?
Nine nominees? There’s hope for us yet! I would think that things are moving in the direction that encompasses us all, just as artists, without regard to sex or skin color. And that’s how it should be.
What does it feel like to hear the audiences at “The Trip to Bountiful” sing along with you, like in a church service? What did you think the first time that happened?
Well, actually, when they started singing, I was completely oblivious to it. I didn’t hear it because I was quite focused on the set and the cast and what was going on there. Someone mentioned it to me one evening: “Did you hear the audience singing?” And I said, “What audience singing”?
And she said, “The audience was singing with you?” I was concerned with the opening of the show, and once that was over, I was sort of relaxed into the role. And I heard this murmur behind me, and they knew the words!
And it’s absolutely a joy to hear that because it just means that they are moved by the whole piece like I or Carrie was. And it’s happened at every single performance. It just lifts you up. And the joy that comes from that really just carries over to you.
What’s next for you?
I have no idea. Whether it’s a Broadway show or movies, I just take what comes to me. That’s exactly what happens in “The Trip to Bountiful.”
