Clowns scare a large majority of the population. Punkers used to scare a large majority of the population. Clown punkers should scare a larger majority however in Orange County, CA there is a band of misfits called The Yeastie Boys that have been wrecking havoc and causing a ruckus for years now. They are infamous for the mess and destruction left in their wake. They have caused more trash to be picked up at the end of a show than if a trash truck had turned over and dumped it’s entire load. The shows are legendary and have made the band one of the special bands everyone in CA yearns to see at least once. The hardest part for these lads is trying to convey the same destruction and mayhem to disc. Their latest release “Clown’s Save The Scene” is a good representation of what it’s like being at one of their shows just without the mess. Utilizing only 7 of the reolving 20 or so members Dirt Williams (bass/vocals), Pat Clown (guitar/vocals), Vinny DaClown (guitar/vocals), Jay O’Clownovan (lead guitar), Joey Clownfino (drums), Jeremy BrownClown (vocals), CottonCandy Andy (clown sounds/vocals) and special guests Clownhooley and Shane McClownin (vocals) these punks set out to destroy the typical OC stigma. The band uses their comedic approaches perfectly and take you on a fantastic carnival ride.
The opening track starts off with “I’m Jo-Jo the ice cream clown with the bestest ice cream in town, we’ll give you the stick, you give it a lick and it will tickle you all the way down.” This is exactly the type of shock value you get from The Yeastie Boys. These lads do not take themselves too seriously and just want to have a good time. The musicianship is top notch which makes the music good and not just another novelty. They use sound bites throughout the disc as well as clown noises that keep you in clown mode. Just don’t go thinking this is a band you could let your pre teen little punk listen too as the music and content is not for the ears of the young and impressionable. The comedic overtones are funny and will remind some of the typical jock rock hijinks with fart sounds and cursing.
Of the 14 tracks on this disc there really isn’t a bad song which is a huge compliment to the dedication of The Yeastie Boys. Some of the highlights are “Clown Dick”, “Back Against The Tent”, “Bozo Got A Problem”, “Clowns Save The Scene” and “Clownstains”. Coming off local success with “Bozo Bomb” it looks like “Clown’s Save The Scene” will keep The Yeastie Boys in the forefront of OC punk. This is definately one of the discs that everyone who appreciates good fast punk rock will enjoy all the way through.
