If you go back in time to look at the folkloric remedies that used foods and condiments or juices as medicine, two home remedies stand out as staples, pickle juice to relieve leg cramps and coconut water to help get rid of simple diarrhea. Coconut water is said to be so pure it once was used as a substitute for blood in a transfusion. It’s amazing how many uses foods can be of help in when it comes to folkloric medicine.
Coconut water can be used for a variety of medical purposes, one of which is intravenous rehydration. A 2000 report tells of a stroke patient in the Solomon Islands who was too ill to drink or use a nasal tube but was successfully rehydrated with a coconut-water IV when no other fluids were available.

Sauerkraut juice was used to relieve acid reflux and leg cramps for some individuals
Before all those ads for drugs for leg cramps or acid reflux, simple sauerkraut juice seemed to relieve acid reflux and leg cramps for some people, especially seniors and athletes, perhaps by supplying enough fermented salty cabbage or cucumber water to make up for the waning digestive enzymes in the stomachs of some older adults.
For athletes, leg cramps are relieved because the pickle juice contains electrolytes and minerals such as a balance of salt, magnesium, and potassium. Does pickle juice replace heavy sweating? And does sauerkraut juice (like a spoon full of apple cider vinegar) help replace waning digestive enzymes as the stomach ages?
Pickle juice had been used to relieve leg cramps
Apparently the fermented water and salt of pickles (cucumbers) an cabbage seems to relieve pain, acid, and perhaps electrolyte imbalances. And for diarrhea, coconut water helps as well as organic extra virgin coconut oil. The fermented briny juices are used by athletes, especially those in contact sports. With young athletes such as football players, cramps happened when athletes exercised to the point of mild dehydration. In the study, those athletes drinking pickle juice felt relief within 85 seconds, almost twice as fast as water or other sports drinks. But too much vinegar at any time upsets the balance of chemicals in your body, for example, it may leach out your potassium. You don’t want to take an excess of any type of vinegar. Usually sauerkraut juice is about cabbage fermented in a salty water mixture or in refrigerated setting using lemon juice without salt.
The reason why the pickle juice relieved heat-induced cramps for the exercising athletes is because pickle juice is full of salt and various other electrolytes. When you sweat too much you lose salt.
The pickle juice replaces the salt (sodium) along with other electrolytes you need. The electrolytes in the pickle juice come from the cucumber, the salt, and the fermentation process because the pickle also has other minerals such as magnesium and potassium. Cucumbers also help your body retain water.
