Yesterday, College Republicans at Portland State University presented a film titled, “Obsession” about radical Islam when Islamic supporters decided that they did not like what they saw and proceeded to bully the college Republican students.
The film, “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West” is a documentary about the rise of radical Islam and what it means to western nations, much like what happened with the rise of Hilter and Nazism in Germany.
The narrative of the film states, “Today, we find ourselves confronted by a new enemy, also engaged in a violent struggle to transform our world. As we sleep in the comfort of our homes, a new evil rises against us. A new menace is threatening, with all the means at its disposal, to bow Western Civilization under the yoke of its values. That enemy is Radical Islam.”
Not long after the film ended, several people from PSU’s Muslim and socialist groups, such as Students United For Palestinian Equal Rights (SUPER) and the International Socialist Organization (ISO), decided they would crash the event with intimidation and accusations of hatred, effectively bullying the College Republicans out of their own event.
Arguments and debates ensued when the Muslims and Islam supporters lashed out.
One Islamic supporter said, “It has nothing but propaganda.” Another Islamic support called the film “garbage”.
One of the supporters called the film racist and then said that the Republican students left without discussing other points of view, of the Islamic supporters, when in fact, the video shows the college Republicans were out-numbered and decided to leave their own event as it became hostile.
A videographer stayed after the College Republicans left and asked the crowd if they are ashamed of what they have to say when they objected that he was still there filming. They did not like that question and did not want to be filmed, although the area is considered public space. One of the supporters went to the campus officer who was standing in the background, spoke with him, and then the officer came over and promptly escorted the videographer out of the room.
The event was filmed and posted here.
