TheraFit by Dr. Lisa is a brand of exceptional shoes that are not just for workouts, but for every woman, every day, for just about every activity she might be doing. It’s much more than just a workout shoe or a walking shoe, and a pair makes life easier, healthier, and possibly, more fun! Comfortable shoes are a pleasure, but they’re not a luxury!
Recently, TheraFit brought a representative to New York and she invited editors to wear test these shoes in one of the most challenging venues for workouts, a actual gym. With some reluctance, this columnist agreed to join beauty and fashion colleagues at one of the branches of Blink Fitness (the new Blink Fitness Murray Hill at 600 3rd Avenue in Manhattan), and participate in a Blink Sweat class. Wearing TheraFit shoes in a high energy class, is quite a different experience than what I usually do, which is simply spend some time on an elliptical trainer or pedaling a bicycle.
Our Blink instructor was a very peppy (and fit) blonde who said she was going to take it easy on us, but some of my colleagues were already sweating merely during the warm-up. Admittedly, the workout left us breathless, but iit was actually, fun. We were guided through a warm-ups. and then a series of cardio and strength workouts specifically designed to offer a total-body conditioning program in a minimal amount of time. The 30-minute Blink Sweat class incorporates one-minute intervals of strength training such as push-ups and medicine ball rotations and slams, as well as cardio bursts like burpees, high knees etc. The workout was challenging, but at the end, I really felt energized, due in part to the fact that my feet didn’t hurt. This Blink Sweat workout would have made me come back for more, if I lived near one of the clubs. Blink Fitness has 13 clubs in the NYC area, giving people a chance to add fitness to their daily routine without having to spend too much time doing it. If I lived or worked near a Blink Fitness gym I’d definitely spend my lunch hours there. The gym was spotless, the staff were helpful and friendly, and I felt right at home. It wasn’t fancy, it wasn’t frilly, it wasn’t just for jocks.
No matter where or how you chose to work out, having the right footwear can make all the difference not just in pleasure, but in safety and results. I don’t know about you, but I can’t really figure out how to select the perfect shoe for all types of activities. There are shoes for running, shoes for cross-training, shoes for walking, shoes! shoes! Shoes! Most women who are not professional or intense athletes will want a shoe that can be used for fitness activities, but can also work beyond the workout at the gym. The hot pink “Deborah” shoe that I wore for the workout is a multi-tasking wonder.
Use can wear these shoes for walking, standing, working out, or whatever you’re doing. There is a real “Dr. Lisa” behind the brand. Lisa Masterson, M.D. is co-host of the Emmy Award- winning television series, The Doctors. Her motivation for creating a shoe that would work for all women for all reasons is as follows: “I wanted to develop a shoe that would empower women. No matter where they are – at work, at the gym, or just running the countless errands that we do. We need a shoe that multitasks with us, and my shoe does. It taps into the latest technology with performance that can be customized and styles that work around the clock. It’s the 12-hour shoe for the 12-hour day.”
TheraFit by Dr. Lisa shoes come with a lot of easy to understand information, because they’re not just plain old running/training/walking sneakers. They may look that way on the outside, but they have a few special bells & whistles. The first is a patented tread design for traction and to prevent sliding, that looks like little chocolate squares at the toe, smart phone keys at the heel. The inner part of the shoe features an Aegis Microbe Shield interior that protects against odor, staining, and deterioration that might be caused by fungus, bacteria and other gross microorganisms you don’t want on your skin! The shoe design has a patented technology that uses multiple layers of cushioning and support with varying densities inside each and every shoe, so the shock of each step is distributed downward and outward. The result is extremely comfortable shoes that cushions your foot on impact, helping to reduce the aches and pains that come with even the most mundane, daily activities. As someone who suffers from a lack of padding on the bottom of my feet, this makes the Therafit shoe a godsend.
But there’s more: Built into each pair of Therafit by Dr. Lisa, is their patented cutting-edge technology; the outsole can be adjusted to allow an increase or decrease in impact resistance. Look at the heel, You’ll see three big dots. They’re not just decoration, they’re dual-density adapters located within the shock-absorbing wedge. This Therafit Personal Comfort System (PCS) Technology lets you remove one, two or all three of the comfort adapters to change the shoe’s impact resistance and cushioning. You can pop them in and out as your feet feel they need it. I actually thought that the shoes were pretty “spongy” with all three of the adapters in place, and didn’t take any out. But actually, the shoes get bouncier and sponge-ier as you remove the adapters. That’s why it pays to read the instructions that come with the shoes in the girly pink and purple box! Ready for a different feeling on your feet the next day? Pop them back in and you have,in essence, a whole different feeling from the same shoe.
There are only two style. There is a leather version called “Renee” ($95.00) available in white leather, that would be perfect for nurses and others who need to be on their feet all day long wearing a professional, lace-up shoe. The workout/walking shoe is the colorful and lightweight, called Deborah ($95.00). It is available in tasteful combos of Pink, Black/Pink, Red, Black/White and Silver/Blue. Due to the inner sole and padding in these shoes, I would advise choosing shoes that are 1/2 size up from your regular. Deborah is a lightweight athletic trainer crafted with breathable mesh and soft, synthetic materials, the Deborah is one of the most comfortable shoes we have tested. Deborah features a molded, removable foot bed giving even more cushion and support. If you’re going to be on your feet, you’ll appreciate the fact that these shoes are lightweight but with a lot of padding and support. You can also feel the arch support inside, so you know your feet won’t ache. This Summer, when the weather is hot, you can wear Deborah and you won’t end up with tired, sweating, irritable feet!
Women like to feel good about their purchases, as well as purchase things that make their feet feel good. Therafit gives back through their One Step Forward Giving Campaign. With every purchase you make, Therafit Shoe will donate $1 to one of the charity partners they support. It’s your choice which one they will donate to.
The Bottom Line: TheraFit by Dr. Lisa are extremely comfortable footwear for work, play, exercise — whatever it is you want to do, you can do it with one shoe. If you’re traveling, these shoes will help you survive a day on your feet while sight-seeing, and your well-spent time in the gym, for exercising. If your feet are happy, it shows on your face.
