It goes without saying, Amanda Berry and Charles Ramsey will forever be linked. One act of bravery and courage begat another and inspired others as a decade old cold case has now come to a close. As the story continues to unfold and details emerge; one thing is certain, this is was an act of contagious courage. Thanks to these two, Amanda and her daughter, Gina de Jesus, and Michelle Knight are all safe and reunited with family today.
The rescue began with Berry yelling as audibly as across the street. Chuck Ramsey had just sat down to eat his prized Big Mac meal. The screaming piqued Ramsey’s interest and he rose to action when he saw a neighbor headed in the direction of the Castro home. Ariel Castro lived alone many thought, so any noise coming from the home was cause for alarm. Once Ramsey chose to investigate further, he spoke with Amanda Berry and she pleaded with him to help her escape.
Ramsey then proceeded to kick the door in and free Berry. Frantic by Ramsey and Berry to 911 help put the harrowing ordeal in perspective. Once Police arrived and identified Berry and her daughter, she informed them that there were two other women in the house. Following their rescue and the end to this bizarre kidnapping, America celebrates the one man and woman brave enough to act when called upon to do so.
Let’s examine this contagious courage:
• Amanda Berry’s decision to seek help.
• Her yells were heard and she spoke to calmly and clearly to Charles Ramsey, her rescuer
• When he heard her and saw the neighbor approaching the house, Charles Ramsey chose to help Amanda Berry escape the house where she’d been captive for over a decade.
• Her rescue wasn’t sufficient, Berry alerted the police that there were others and made sure that they also had the same privilege as she did.
The chain of events solved three missing persons cases all because one positive action led to another action and persisted until all three women were safe and their captors arrested. Amanda Berry is a hero and so is Charles Ramsey. However, heroism on the 2200 block of Seymour Avenue began inside the Castro house and didn’t end until all the women and children were out of that house!
Sylvia Browne is wrong again
Ramsey describes himself as a Christian and an American. Chances are he wasn’t the only Christian American within reach. Who knows if Berry previously sought help only for passersby to ignore her desperate pleas.
Whatever the case, the truest lesson learned in this is that one must be ready to be a difference maker when called upon even if you’re forced to do it alone. Today Amanda Berry,Georgina de Jesus and Michelle Knight are alive and safe in large part because of Berry’s choice to be a heroine contagiously courageous for herself and others!
