When we look at a news story through the lens of the spiritual, it often becomes clear as to “why” someone could have behaved in the manner they did. How could a person fail to be taken down by a stun gun for instance. The human body normally cannot continue to function regularly after being stunned, resulting in the person going down, but not in the case of the woman recently killed at a Costco in Virginia.
Sterling, Va. may be scratching their heads to figure out why a woman showed an unnatural ability to resist the effects of a deputy’s stun gun, and for that matter why she was acting the way she was in the first place. God’s word may shed some light on the subject.
The woman, who has been identified as 38-year-old Mhai Scott, had been handing out pizza samples earlier in the day. It was during that time that witnesses reported her exhibiting strange behavior and she began to threaten employees with a knife and scissors that she was waving about. It was then that the police were called.
All throughout the New Testament there are reports of people who were possessed with a devil or many devils and their behavior seemed like they were insane but in fact they were possessed and not in full control over themselves. As one shopper, Elizabeth Avelar, told News4, “The woman was very nice, very polite”. Even very nice and polite people can be overcome by the devil who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy lives, but Jesus came to give life and give it more abundantly the scriptures say.
Jesus is clear that Satan can even bind a follower of God as we see in Luke 13:16, “And ought not this woman being a daughter of Abraham whom Satan hath bound, lo these eighteen years be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?” Even Jesus had compassion on this woman bound 18 years by the demonic, and it was made clear she was the daughter of Abraham. Abraham’s seed is blessed and by all rights should not be attacked by the devil, and yet this woman was attacked. We also see that she had been attacked by Satan with sickness as she was unable to “lift up herself” it says in Luke 13:11. So, not only was she healed of a sickness, but she was loosed of the demon called infirmity who caused the sickness.
If the blessed seed of Abraham could be attacked (before Christ died and put the devil to shame and under our feet) as we see this woman had suffered for 18 years, then we too can be attacked (but only if we fail to believe in the promise of Abraham) seeing as those who believe in Jesus are the blessed seed of Abraham. “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessings of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” (Cross reference with Deuteronomy 28 to see the blessing and the curse including all sickness-verse 61)
As we look at Mark 5:1-13 we read of a man who had a demon which turned out to be Legion which “are many”(verse 9). He was a severe case but had something in common with Scott in that he was very strong. It says in Mark 5:2-3, “And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:” Scott also was very strong and did not seem phased by the stun gun blast which would bring the average person to their knees.
The report by News4 also indicated that Scott became very angry when she ran out of pizza to hand out as samples. This too could show signs of a demonic presence, but not necessarily. The demon in the man in the tombs was identified as “Legion: for we are many” (Mark 5:9) and this “Legion” begged Jesus not to send them away (verse 10), but asked to be sent into a herd of swine that were there. “And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.” (Mark 5:13)
These demons called Legion also exhibit the ability to make one angry and crazy and do things unnatural. The pigs ran into the sea and drowned themselves. That just isn’t the normal behavior of a pig, yet there went about 2,000 pigs running off into the sea to die for no apparent reason. If you had not known the conversation these demons had with Jesus, you would never have known why the pigs did this unusual thing. So, it is understandable that this woman, if possessed or influenced by the devil, would most likely act in a way that was not normal to her. Remember, she was remembered as a very nice and polite person, not someone who would threaten people when something didn’t go just right, and most assuredly she would not have super human strength unless something was different in her.
Now, of course there are other reasons a person could be super strong, and those include such things as being on some kind of drug, whether prescription or otherwise, and clinical insanity is also known to cause someone to exhibit super strength. However, this woman was not spoken of as being unstable, but instead as being very nice and polite. This points to her behavior on the day of her death as being unusual.
In the last days we are forewarned of an increase in the demonic (John 12:31; Revelation 12:9). Satan was put to shame on the cross and was also put under our feet (Romans16:20; Ephesians 1:19-23;). As Holy Spirit filled believers in Christ Jesus we are called to finish the work of Jesus. John 14:12 says, “Verily, Verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my father.” We are to keep on doing what Jesus did and he cast out devils every day. We will also do even greater things than he did because Jesus went to the father. We know that by Jesus going to the Father, the Holy Spirit could be sent to dwell in us. This is the “Jesus” power we possess. Christians need to get off their seats and get busy destroying the works of the devil. Perhaps Scott could have been saved from an early death if only one Christian would have stepped up to destroy the works of the devil and given her a chance to return to her right mind.
Our hearts and prayers go out to the loved ones in their time of grief.
