Courtney Love has claimed that her daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, was offered the role of Bella Swan in the movie “Twilight,” but many fans of the franchise are doubtful that this claim is true. Love made the remarks during an interview on Howard Stern’s radio show on May 30, 2013.
Frances Bean Cobain, who is 20, is the daughter of Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain, who died in 1994 at the age of 27. The official cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but many conspiracy theorists believe that he was murdered.
Love (who is 48) said during the Howard Stern interview: “When [Frances Bean] was 13 she was offered ‘Twilight.’ She was offered [the role of] Bella in ‘Twilight.’ Someone just saw a picture of her in a magazine and sent me the script for Twilight and she was like, ‘That’s a sexist, Mormon piece of sh*t!’ She was 13! It would have destroyed her life.”
Stephenie Meyer, the author of the “Twilight” book series, is Mormon. The Bella Swan character is supposed to be in her late teens in the “Twilight” movies.
The first “Twilight” movie (directed by Catherine Hardwicke) was released in 2008. Four other “Twilight” movies were released in each subsequent year. All of the “Twilight” movies have been blockbuster hits, and they have consistently been in the Top 10 of movies on demand of the year, from 2009 to 2013.
The role of Bella Swan in the “Twilight” movies was famously played by Kristen Stewart, who became romantically involved in real life with her “Twilight” leading man, Robert Pattinson, who played vampire Edward Cullen. Stewart and Pattinson publicly dated from 2009 until their breakup in 2013. Their relationship was the subject of a major tabloid scandal in July 2012, when paparazzi photos showed Stewart passionately kissing her “Snow White and the Huntsman” director Rupert Sanders, who was married at the time. (Sanders’ wife Liberty Ross filed for divorce in 2013.) Stewart issued a public apology for her infidelity, and although Pattinson briefly dumped her and took her back, he reportedly broke up with her for good in May 2013.
The “Twilight” filmmakers have not commented on Love’s claim that her daughter was asked to play Bella Swan. Frances Bean Cobain has dabbled in modeling and art, but she has not had a major project that has made her a success in any particular field.
Kurt Cobain’s widow Love had some success as an actress in movies, most notably for her Golden Globe-nominated role as Althea Flynt in the 1995 bipoic “The People vs. Larry Flynt,” but she has been focusing on her music career in recent years. She has also had a long history of substance abuse and legal problems.
“Twilight” director Hardwicke has not publicly mentioned any other actress except Stewart who was in the final running to play Bella. But Hardwicke did reveal several years ago that the final four actors to be considered for the Edward Cullen tole were Pattinson, Jackson Rathbone (who ended up being cast as vampire Jasper Hale in the “Twilight” movies), Ben Barnes (who played Caspian in two “Chronicles of Narnia movies) and Shiloh Fernandez (who was later cast in Hardwicke’s 2011 movie “Red Riding Hood,” which was a critically panned flop). Hardwicke has said in many interviews that she knew Pattinson was the right person for the role because he had the best chemistry with Stewart.
Frances Bean and her mother have had a rocky relationship over the years (when Frances Bean was a minor, Love lost custody of her more than once), but Love told Stern that she and Frances Bean are on great terms now. Mother and daughter are both known for having a tendency to post ranting messages and insults on the Internet. Frances Bean was recently in the news for instigating a Twitter fight with Kendall Jenner (one of Kim Kardashian’s half-sisters).
And in 2012, Love made an outrageous claim on Twitter that Dave Grohl, who used to be Nirvana’s drummer, made sexual advances on Frances Bean. Grohl and Frances Bean vehemently denied the allegation, and Love later apologized for her remarks.
