The Cube World Alpha has been out for several weeks now. While there are some obvious changes that need to be made, the game shows a lot of promise.
For the uninitiated Cube World is an open world, randomly/procedurally generated action game akin to the Legend of Zelda or Darksiders. You setup a character by choosing a class (warrior, ranger, rogue, or mage) and one of several races (from humans to elves to frogmen and more). After this you create a world with a name and a seed, the seed provides the number for the random number in the game code. From there you are dropped into a world and left to your own devices.
Here’s where one of the major problems arise, there’s no tutorial. You either figure things out or Google them. This is forgivable due to the nature of the game being an alpha but it can make things difficult for new players. A friend played the game for around 5 hours before he knew there was a dodge that gives you invincibility. The controls can currently not be remapped which can make some of the controls feel a bit awkward. Trying to climb a wall with the ctrl key while trying to move with WASD can be difficult.
All this aside there is still a lot of fun to be had. Exploring the world can lead you to teleportation stones, a city, castles, caves, giant trees, lakes, oceans, and more. The world is divided into biomes, and they are huge. You can even use a hang glider or sailboat to get around the world. You also have the option of getting a pet and many of them serve as mounts.
One thing that needs to be addressed is the speed at which you move around. Mount speed is quite slow. Hung gliding can get you around relatively quickly if you can find enough areas to jump from. The fastest way to get around is sailing but naturally this is only useful if you find a decent river or an ocean biome. Walking through a biome, just going straight through, seems to take forever. You could spend 10 to 15 minutes going in a straight line through a biome. If you are exploring it’s not bad, but when you have somewhere specific you want to go it can be a bit daunting.
As you gain experience you get levels and skill points. Currently you only have 3 attack skills and six passive skills pet health, swimming, climbing, mount speed, hang gliding and sailing. The latter two affect your speed while using the method of travel. A more advanced skill tree is planned. So with time the tree could really let you customize your playstyle more.
You also get loot as you kill enemies. It may be an item or equipment. Sometimes it’ll be a formula. The difference between a rare item and common one can be quite large. Ultimately rare items and formulas are the main draw to killing enemies aside from experience. Currently the best way to level up is taking on the missions (crossed swords on the map) which can help you level much faster.
Cube World is obviously still alpha but even with that the two person team has a lot of features implemented and the game shows a lot of potential. Playing with 4 or 5 people on a sever can eat away your time quickly. Currently once you explore a few biomes and get to level 40 or 50 it may start to get old. This will likely change as they get more added to the game and improve travel speed.
Have you played Cube World? What are your thoughts?
