On June 11, D23: The Official Disney Fan Club announced that Disney Theatrical Productions will throw a one-night special performance at the 2013 D23 Expo. “Broadway and Beyond” will highlight songs from Disney’s Broadway musicals, performed by some of the artists who have made the musicals memorable.
Hosted by Thomas Schumacher, president and producer, Disney Theatrical Productions, “Broadway and Beyond” will feature Heidi Blickenstaff (Ursula, “The Little Mermaid”), Ashley Brown (Mary, “Mary Poppins” and Belle, “Beauty and The Beast”), Merle Dandridge (Kala, “Tarzan” and Aida and Nehebka, “Aida”), Josh Strickland (Tarzan, “Tarzan”) and Alton Fitzgerald White (Mufasa, “The Lion King”). The artists will sing both songs from the musicals they starred and other music from Disney on Broadway’s extensive hit list.
Disney Theatrical Productions (DTP, also known as Disney on Broadway) is part of the Disney Theatrical Group. Formed in 1994, DTP includes eight Broadway titles and 15 productions that are currently being produced or licensed. “Beauty and the Beast,” its inaugural production, played for 13 years on Broadway and has been seen in 28 countries.
“The Lion King” opened in 1997 and received six Tony Awards in 1998, including Best Musical. Now in its 16th season, “The Lion King” is currently the highest-grossing show in Broadway history.
More recently, DTP opened “Newsies” on Broadway. In 2012, the production earned two Tony Awards, for Best Choreography and Best Original Song, and is now in its second year at Nederlander Theatre. “Peter and the Starcatcher” won five Tony Awards the same year and currently plays off-Broadway at New World Stages.
“Aladdin,” Disney on Broadway’s newest musical, will open in Toronto in fall 2013.
“Broadway and Beyond” will take place at Stage 23 of the Anaheim Convention Center on Friday, Aug. 9 at 6:30 p.m.
The show is the second special musical performance to be announced for the D23 Expo. “Richard M. Sherman and Alan Menken: The Disney Songbook,” a one-night only performance starring the legendary songwriters, will take place on Saturday.
