Even as a mile-wide tornado was wreaking havoc in Oklahoma, Daily Show creator Lizz Winstead issued an anti-conservative tweet that sparked outrage from a number of people, Twitchy reported Monday.
“This tornado is in Oklahoma so clearly it has been ordered to only target conservatives,” she tweeted.
The tweet has since been deleted, but not before being captured by Twitchy.
Winstead, however, wasn’t finished.
“How long has Obama known about this Tornado?” she added.
Response on social media was swift and angry.
“[A]s an Oklahoman, I don’t think this was something that would result in my continuing to follow you,” one person responded.
“The kids trapped in a school think you’re hilarious,” another person tweeted.
“You just need to stop. You do NOT know what you’re talking about. Two schools destroyed,” added another Twitter user.
“The subtext of a tweet from ‘Daily Show’ co-creator Lizz Winstead was clearly meant to insult the pro-life and family values people who live in the state of Oklahoma, one of the most Republican-oriented states in the nation,” a post at Life News said.
She later issued an apology for the original tweet, calling it a “political joke.”
“Made a political joke, Twas before devastation revealed. In hindsight, had I understood, I would have refrained. Beyond sorry,” she wrote, adding the hashtag “#LetMeHaveIt.”
Some on Twitter obliged what appeared to be her request.
“I don’t know Liz, but she seems like an awful, awful human being to me,” one person tweeted.
“Apparently, @lizzwinstead thinks natural disasters are fodder for humor. It would be hysterical if @msnbc & @HuffingtonPost dumped her,” another Twitter user added.
Winstead later admitted being an “idiot” with her original message and recommended making a donation to help victims of the tornado.
“If any Oklahomans have a charity that they love, hit me up I’ll tweet it out,” she said.
Initial estimates placed the death toll at 51, with some reports saying as many as 91 died. The Oklahoma City Medical Examiner’s Office, however, put the death toll at 24, saying that some victims had been double-counted.
