It was earlier this month, roughly around the time NBC announced they were renewing Community for a fifth season, that a story appeared on Deadline stating that Dan Harmon might possibly maybe hopefully be returning to his old job as showrunner on ‘Community’. As the internet can be a place full of dreams and disappointment, not much mind was paid to this possible rumor and life moved on.
Yesterday, while packing up for a trip back into town, a friend over at Hollywookiee.com sent a text stating “Dan Harmon is returning to Community!”. With not a lot of time to ponder over this message, I headed to the airport and soon was on a plane soaring back to Los Angeles.
Today, it seems Hollywookiee.com is blowing up, and rightfully so! While there is still no concrete word on whether Mr. Harmon will be returning to his rightful spot overseeing the show he created, it looks as if Curt at Hollywookiee might be onto something. He attended the latest recording of Dan Harmon’s podcast Harmontown, where he informed his audience that, “he has been asked to return to Community.” Immediately, it’s reported, Harmon requested the statement be edited from the podcast further stating it was only for the live audience to hear. But alas, he quickly changed his mind because, internet! He went on, “Ahhh f*ck it. I don’t care who knows!”
Harmon went on to joke that “he would only return if they brought Chevy Chase back too,” and proceeded to immediately laugh at the absurd notion. Ah, comedy!
Still, Mr. Harmon has remained quiet and neither NBC nor Sony are offering any official statement on the subject. And yes, every Community fan out there is probably holding onto a heaping amount of suspicion here. We all know NBC hasn’t had a good track record the past few years regarding their programming choices. Add that to Community’s sub par 4th Season, this information seems a bit too good to be true (please be true!).
It’s still noteworthy that outlets like The Hollywood Reporter are also “confirming” the story. It’s still a wee bit unclear what Harmon has been asked to return to. Hell, it’s unclear who THR confirmed this story with too, as they may have also been in attendance at the recent podcast recording or just recycling the information.
Along with Harmon, Deadline is reporting that former writer-producer Chris McKenna has also been approached about rejoining the show for its final season. McKenna presided over the first three seasons of Community and left last May to move onto Universal TV. Harmon and McKenna were replaced by showrunner David Guarascio and writer-producer Moses Port. It’s being reported both are opting to move on from the production as their one-year deal has come to an end.
Damn, if this story proves to be truth, the return of Dan Harmon could prove to be triumphant for both him and NBC as Community is only one of two returning comedies slated for the 2013 – 2014 season (the other being Parks And Recreation). Only time will tell how this all pans out.
Until then, let’s all cross our fingers and shout from the rooftops, “Six seasons and a movie!”
