Dogs are being put to death for minor offenses small bites, being obnoxious, or running loose all over the country. Sadly many of these dogs are being euthanized because the owner don’t fight the charges because they cannot afford the court costs, kennel fees, and attorney fees associated with fighting these charges.
Many of them don’t know where to turn for help fighting to save their dog’s life so they give up before the battle even starts, but there is help for these dogs. The Lexus Project, a non-profit organization has been saving dogs from dangerous dog labels or death row. The dogs are being reunited with their owners, retrained then to put up for adoption or placed in a dog sanctuary instead of being murdered by a broken system that kills dogs instead of giving them second chances.
Part of the problem is reports being headlined dog attacks child or dog attacks dog and people go to the worst case scenario without even reading the article or getting the facts right. There is always a reason for the dog’s actions. Often fear is involved in the bite or the dog may have been provoked by accident or on purpose. People are not put to death for attacking each other then why should dogs be put to death. Most dogs can be retrained, sent to a dog sanctuary, or adopted out. A perfect example of dog’s being rehabilitated is the dogs Michael Vick used in his dog fighting ring. Seven of them have earned Canine Good Citizen’s Certificate and three of the seven are therapy dogs who visit nursing homes and children read books to them.
A lot of the information on the web doesn’t accurately educate people about dogs and their behavior. A lot of people believe that once dogs taste blood they want blood, which is inaccurate information. Some dogs eat a raw diet and it doesn’t turn them into bad dogs. Another main stream issue is people believing certain breeds are vicious and horrible creatures. It’s not fair to judge a book by its cover then why are we judging dogs by their breeds. It’s important to learn the entire story instead of being quick to decide on a story. A dogs life may be on the line.
