I actually don’t live in the City of Pittsburgh — I live literally about several hundred yards away in Wilkinsburg which has its own weak mayor, strong council plus a police department that I think people are trying to take away from us — but what affects the city and the county affects me. So I was quite pleased when Bill Peduto won the mayor’s race during the May 22 primary, beating out the old guard and a very bad run by Jake Wheatley, a black candidate who seemed to be in it to draw off black voters from the most liberal white candidate (Peduto) thereby ensuring a win by Ravenstahl if he stayed in or Wagner his replacement. Just my opinion…
(Hey Jake: when the white folks give you 60 grand that’s just enough for you to lose then you’re a pawn not a real candidate. However, my respect has grown for Ed Gainey, also black, who threw his early support behind Peduto. I’ll keep these things in mind for the future as to who to trust on stuff. But I digress.)
Peduto would bring to the Pittsburgh’s mayor’s seat an integrity and intelligence that quite frankly we haven’t seen for awhile. And what happens in Pittsburgh affects what happens in my tiny boro of Wilkinsburg. So better leadership in Pittsburgh means better conditions here. The same could be said of county leadership as well. I’m glad Rich Fitzgerald is there and not some Republican.
So I was kind of depressed when I saw this ad in Craigslist several days ago:
Getting signatures from any registered voter in the city of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. Depending on your location. Very simple you just introduce yourself and tell them who you represent and ask them to sign. Please call 412-600-5068
I gave them a call and found out that one of the persons they were collecting signatures for was Darlene Harris, current president of Pittsburgh’s City Council. Here are two interesting facts about my hometown area of Pittsburgh. The person who wins the Democratic Party primary race on May 22 usually wins the mayor’s race in November. Two, the current mayor Luke Ravenstahl is currently involved in a scandal that may or may not force him to resign before the major’s race in November. If Ravenstahl were to resign early because of an indictment that would make Darlene Harris, current City Council president, the new mayor. She could also run to retain the seat if she’s successful in getting enough signatures. Or, because Ravenstahl apparently hates Peduto — probably because he read a book — he could resign early and let Darlene run as an incumbent of say several months or so.
This could be the plan. If so, it’s a horrible plan. If the mayor and Darlene Harris do absolutely nothing then Peduto is pretty much guaranteed a victory. Frankly, he might win even if that scenario comes to pass but why risk it? You could split the vote and give the Republican nominee a shot at victory. Why give an openly fascist party like the GOP even a glimmer of a shot in the mayor’s race? If Peduto wins you keep the seat not only in Democratic hands but in a Democratic Party Liberal’s hand for once in a long time who doesn’t seem to be openly corrupt or bought off by the machine.
I sincerely wish that Darlene’s efforts to get on the ballot fails (doubtful) but I also wish she wasn’t even trying.
