Dave Matthews Band rocks Austin 360 despite show reschedule

by used view

The Dave Matthews Band was scheduled to perform at Austin360 Amphitheater on Tuesday May 21, 2013 but the show was rescheduled for the next day due to a line of unpredictable thunderstorms moving across much of Texas. For most fans it created a lot of last minute hotel reservations, others turned in their tickets for refunds and headed home. The ones who came back the next day were in for a treat.

The original opening act was rescheduled from the Carolina Chocolate Drops, to a local Austin band named Bright Light Social Hour. Bright Light Social Hour rocked the opening act and were themselves awestruck to be opening for the Dave Matthews Band. Lead singer Jack O’Brien said when they got the call to open for DMB, they “couldn’t believe it” and “thought it was a joke.” Several times during the opening act Jack made remarks about the “*explicit* Dave Matthews Band coming up next.”

As DMB fans took their seats many on the lawn were in for a surprise as venue representative came around passing out free armband upgrades for pit access. Often folks who sit on the lawn do so at every DMB show, mainly for the atmosphere and, at DMB shows, the dancing room. The upgrade to the pit for some was most likely a once and a lifetime opportunity for some. If you got free upgrade to the pit leave a comment below and tell us about your experience.

The concert was a treat for many DMB fans. Cry Freedom, a old time fan favorite was played. The band was joined by Jazz legend Stanley Jordan for this song and Rhyme and Reason which followed. Cry Freedom hadn’t been played since 2010. Jazz musician Andre Hayward also joined the band on Jimi Thing, a song that Dave Matthews said the band wouldn’t be playing much more at the show a few days earlier in Dallas. “I know we said we wouldn’t be playing this song much anymore but its been a week,” said Matthews.
