The city of Fort Smith welcomed a new doughnut shop on May 12, 2013 when Daylight Doughnuts opened its new location at 2100 Rogers Avenue.
Daylight Doughnuts has been around since the era of big cars and bobbysoxers. Tommy and Lucille Day opened their first Daylight Doughnuts restaurant in 1954, and since then the Tulsa-based chain has grown to almost 1000 locations. Interestingly enough, the reason that the company is called Daylight Doughnuts has little to do with their hours of operation. The name came from the fact that the Days used a light doughnut mix to make their doughnuts instead of the traditional heavy mix that other companies used.
While all of that is well and good, the real question is how were they? The light doughnut mix does produce good tasting doughnuts. The doughnuts served had a pleasing flavor and were well made. However that is all that can be said. The customer service was okay, but it seemed like the staff was in the “get them in, get them out” mode. So if you are looking for exquisite service, you may want to go elsewhere. The other issue is space. The building that Daylight Doughnuts uses is tiny. There are at best five tables, so if there is a rush odds are that you will not be able to get a table.
What may seem strange to many is that this is Daylight Doughnuts’ second try in Fort Smith. There used to be a Daylight Doughnuts located at 2600 Zero Street across from the Wal-Mart super center. This examiner is not privy to the details of why they are not around anymore, so it is hard to say exactly what caused that location to close.
