While appearing on CSPAN’s “Washington Journal,” Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., said those who oppose Obamacare are comparable to the Confederate Army in the Civil War, CNS News reported Wednesday.
“This is Gettysburg, this is the big battle and after this the Civil War was pretty much down hill for the South. That’s really what’s happening here for the forces against Obamacare,” he said.
“We’re going to make every effort we can to keep the president’s spine made out of steel,” he said when asked if President Obama would compromise spending in other departments in order to continue funding the implementation of Obamacare. “This is not a time to back down.”
“The president has to stand up and fight at this point like he’s never fought before in his life,” McDermott said before making his Civil War comparison.
But McDermott may be getting his metaphors mixed up.
Throughout the Civil War, Confederate forces were usually outnumbered and outgunned by a much larger Union Army. The Confederacy also suffered from a Union blockade that helped choke the Southern economy.
Today, those who oppose Obamacare far outnumber supporters.
A recent CBS survey found that 54 percent of respondents said they disapprove of the law, compared with just 36 percent who said they approve. CBS also found that support for repealing Obamacare is as high as it has ever been.
“The latest Washington Post/ABC News poll indicates that the only group of Americans who remain strongly supportive of Obamacare are self-described ‘liberal Democrats,’” the Weekly Standard said Tuesday.
The only question at this point is whether or not Republicans have the backbone to stay in the fight and get the job done.
