Right now all of south Florida is talking about the big game 7 matchup between the Miami heat and the Indiana Pacers. However, a nefarious plot almost took place that would have had the Miami area buzzing about anything else besides a basketball game. Now, it’s great being the West Palm Beach & Miami Movie Examiner. I get to inform all of south Florida about all the newest movies, movie- related events in the area and I even get to interview a celebrity or two. However, like many people in power, I wanted more. Perhaps my goal to take over and rule all of Miami/Dade, Broward and Palm Beach county was too lofty a goal, but when I heard a couple of Minions from “Despicable Me 2”, opening July 3, were going to be in town, along with a Despicablimp, I thought this would be a golden opportunity to make it all happen.
Getting to meet the Minions and putting me in a position to take over the Despicablimp was going to be the easy part. With my media credentials, it was a cinch making my way into North Perry Airport in Hollywood, Florida where the blimp was set to land. I knew where it was heading anyway thanks to www.despicablimp.com. You can track the blimp’s flight path from the site and learn other cool facts on the Despicablimp too.
I was sure I could get some alone time with the Minions. I would get my picture taken with them and casually mention to them the dastardly plan I had concocted. They’ve helped Gru (Steve Carrell) on missions like this many times in the past, so they would be perfect er… minions to help me. I am aware that in “Despicable Me 2”, Gru gets recruited by the Anti-Villain League to help combat a new super villain, yet I believe the Minions were aching to do something bad again. Besides, in the newest trailer, I saw Agent Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig) zap them with her Lipstick Taser, so maybe being good has not worked out for them.
Have you ever tried talking to a Minion? You might think it would be fun and cool, but their attention spans can barely make it into double digit seconds. As I was laying out my plan I said the word “but” and then one Minion tapped the other and said “butt” and then they were both rolling around on the ground laughing. It was VERY frustrating.
Apparently, Gru got wind of my plan and used his weather machine to thwart me. We were told it was too windy to go up in the blimp, but we could go inside the blimp to take pictures while it was docked. I thought that when I got in, I could order the Minions to release the Despicablimp when I was inside and gave them the thumbs up (see slideshow). When I gave them the signal, all they did was dance around and bump into each other while they were trying to amuse some children who were there (see video). My plan to rule all of south Florida had failed.
I must admit, it was a fun afternoon anyway. Besides, if I became supreme ruler down here, I probably wouldn’t have time to see all of the upcoming summer movies, like “Despicable Me 2” and write in-depth reviews on them. Who knows, maybe I can get some interviews with some of the cast members or the folks who helped make it. “Despicable Me” was my #1 3D movie of 2010 and this new entry looks like it could be a contender for 2013. We’ll find out for sure when “Despicable Me 2” opens on July 3.
