Yard work is something many people have to deal with every single year, some people even truly enjoy it! Yard work has always been something prevalent in my family, we don’t stop at weeding the garden and mowing the lawn, we garden and do yard work for the majority of our springs and summers. Here in Metro Detroit, gardening is making a resurgence. More and more people are gardening for fun; vegetable gardens are on trend these days, and it’s a noble effort!
Most gardeners have already been busy planting seeds, and tilling gardens for weeks, if not months. It is always nice to get new additions to ones garden, whether those additions are decorative, imperative, or something for the gardener themselves.
Here are some of my picks for the gardeners in all of us – all made locally in Metro Detroit.
Every gardener needs to pamper themselves after the countless hours of taking care of the garden’s every need. Cleaning the dirt off oneself is sometimes a heavy task, try out some gardener soap. For those of us that want to craft some ourselves, there are countless recipes online (for those that don’t want to deal with lye and cold processing their soap, look for a melt and pour recipe). If crafting your own soap sounds tedious or unfulfilling, there are many people that love doing it and will gladly help out!
SimplyCreativeLiving in Detroit sells a gardeners soap, which is shown here.
Painted clay pots
Any gardener is going to need clay pots somewhere down the line. Whether pots are needed to start seeds or to transfer plants, why not make them a bit more attractive and add some paint!
This is one of the cutest designs I have seen in small seed starter pots. Snatch these up before somebody else does, or choose to make your own using pots and outdoor safe paint, creating anything your heart desires!
Clay pots and small bottles of outdoor/patio paint can be bought at hobby, garden supply, craft, hardware, and most big box stores like Walmart and Meijer. These supplies tend to be very economical.
These awesome seed pots can be bought on Etsy via BarnabyHuxley
Signs are a perfect way to show off a garden! Whether one has a small flower bed or a huge vegetable garden, it should be shown off with pride. Garden signs come in a myriad of shapes, sizes, and materials; from wood and metal, to stone like the one shown.
The custom vegetable garden sign shown can be purchased on Etsy at ExpressiveStone which is from right in Metro Detroit.
Garden stones are just as versatile as garden signs! There are so many possibilities; shapes, sizes, and textures can all vary greatly. If one doesn’t have any stones handy, they can often be bought at home improvement shops.
These stones shown were picked from the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and hand painted. Try out painting your own stones, or have a small business do that for you!
These stones can be purchased from TheTroveShoppe on Etsy.
All gardeners need seeds from time to time; anything that grows was once a seed, and growing ones own flowers and harvesting food can be enormously rewarding. With the interest in things local and sustainable, and the controversy in recent times over GMOs, obtaining locally grown and harvested seeds is a great option.
These tomato seeds shown are locally and organically grown in Detroit and can be bought on Etsy through GrasshopperHillFarm.
