A majestic Tall Ship, tour boats cruising down the river, humungous sand sculptures, jet skis roaring down the waterway, continuous live music and spectacular fireworks are just some of the sights and sounds that await visitors to the 7th annual Detroit River Days celebration being held on Friday, June 21, Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23 along Detroit, Michigan’s Riverfront and the 55th annual Target Fireworks Show taking place on Monday, June 24. It is approximately a 2.5 hour drive from Cleveland to Detroit.
Detroit River Days Presented by the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort, Detroit River Days is an unique celebration of the city’s maritime, ecological, cultural and even culinary history and heritage taking place along Detroit’s RiverWalk.
One of the highlights of River Days is the chance to tour a Tall Ship, the 85 foot Appledore IV which will be docked at the new Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority Dock. Visitors can also take a one hour tour aboard Diamond Jack’s River Boats (docked at Rivard Place) where they can enjoy the sights on the Detroit River.
Other activities include jet ski demonstrations and Freestyle Championships (presented by Typhoon Tommy), carnival rides, lots of activities for kids (at the Meijer Kids Stage and the Flagstar Kids Zone) and a 5K run.
You won’t want to miss the 50-60 amazing sand sculptures created by Sarasota, Florida-based Team Sandtastic including one 50 ton sculpture and two 12.5 ton sand sculptures.
Continuous musical entertainment will be provided by over 25 street performers and by over 60 musical acts performers on three stages. Among some of the featured entertainers are national recording artists the O’Jays, The Guess Who and George Clinton.
Of course, there will be lots and lots of food and beverages available for purchase at the Pepsi Taste of Detroit Food Court.
The Detroit River Days celebration officially ends on Monday evening at 10 p.m. with the big bang of the Ford Fireworks Presented by Target featuring a display of more than 10,000 pyrotechnics. The fireworks can be viewed from anywhere along the RiverWalk and admission to the fireworks show is free.
Hours for the Detroit River Days are 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. on Sunday. Reminder: The Fireworks display takes place on Monday, June 24 at 10 p.m.
Admission to the River Days celebration (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) is $3 for adults ($5 after 5 p.m.). Admission for seniors (65+) and children 3 and under is free. Admission to the Fireworks show is free. Parking is available at several nearby Garages and Parking Decks.
