Tonight was finally the night, the Season 8 premiere of “Dexter” debuted on Showtime on Sunday, June 30. With LaGuerta no longer after his head, Dexter is able to go on about his life. It has been six months since LaGuerta was murdered and everything is where he wants it to be with the exception of his sister, Debra, who avoids him and holds a strong grudge against him. Debra’s conscious, peace-of-mind, and everything she once stood for is shattered after killing LaGuerta.
As revealed in previous spoilers here, Debra has quit Miami Metro and is now working for a PI firm. Deb’s life is now consumed by drugs and alcohol, as she’s on a damaging path. Dexter breaks into her house, worried for her wellbeing. After not finding her at home, Dexter visits her job and is told that they haven’t heard from her either. Dex gets all the information he can on her current location in hopes of finding her. Dexter finds Debra after easily guessing the password to her accounts. Dex manages to talk to Deb at a gasoline station, where she tells Dex that she hates him and shot the wrong person in that trailer.
Meanwhile at Miami Metro, our favorite police force is called in to a crime scene. When Dexter lifts the victim’s head up they find that his brain has been cut off and there is a missing piece. Miami Metro brings in Dr. Evelyn Vogel to help out with the case of the serial killer they are now calling the Brain Surgeon. Dr. Vogel specializes on serial killers, and she’s quickly on to Dexter.
Dex continues to look into the case Debra is working on and discovers that she might be in danger. In charge of Harrison, Dex has no option but to bring his son along. At a hotel, Dex warns Debra that she’s in trouble and could get killed. The siblings exchange words and attract the attention of the man Debra is with and Dex ends up killing him.
Back at home, Dexter realizes that Deb is right and he’s the one that is lost and alone. Dr. Vogel catches up with Dexter and gives him a large envelope of drawings that Dexter did as a child. The drawings are of people being murdered. Dr. Vogel then tells him that she knows about Harry’s code.
“A Beautiful Day” opens the final season of “Dexter” beautifully, reintroducing the characters and their current situation after the events in season 7.
