Episode three of “Dexter” Season 8, “What’s Eating Dexter Morgan?,” aired on Showtime on Sunday, July 14. In the third episode, the manhunt for the Brain Surgeon continues as Vogel and Dexter attempt to figure things out, while Deb’s depression is getting worse.
A cop wakes up a sleeping Debra in her car. He recognizes her as former Lieutenant Morgan, notices that there are a lot of opened bottles and that she crashed into a post. Deb is taken to the station and she calls Quinn to try and get her off any charges.
In the meantime, Miami Metro find who they think is the Brain Surgeon. The supposed serial killer was staged to look like he committed suicide, but only Dexter knows this.
Quinn gives Deb a ride to work after picking her up and tries to talk to her. He can tell something is wrong and wants to help her, but Deb doesn’t tell him anything.
Two more jars with brain pieces are left on Vogel’s porch. She meets with Dexter so they can get to the bottom of things as it appears that the situation is getting worse. While in conversation, after Quinn tells Dex about Deb, Dexter reveals to Vogel that Debra knows all about him and is not taking it well.
Dexter visits Deb at work to try and talk to her about how she is doing. Dex asks Deb to go to dinner with him, threating that if she doesn’t he will be showing up at her work every day. Deb reluctantly accepts.
Dexter gets a lead on the Brain Surgeon and goes to investigate a suspect. He later stops by Vogel’s home to tell her that he plans on breaking into the suspects house to find out more. Before Dex leaves to meet up with Deb for dinner, Vogel asks Dexter why he didn’t kill Debra when she found out he was a serial killer, and why he loves her. Dex is unsure about his answer, but doesn’t back-off and insists that he will help her.
At dinner, Dexter attempts to break through to Deb by showing her that a person she saved back in her Miami Metro days is now with his family all thanks to her. Dex tells Deb that she is a good person, to which she doesn’t reply and just shrugs.
As promised, Dex breaks into the suspects house and finds that the kitchen is actually a kill room. In the fridge he finds several body parts, including a brain. After analyzing it though, he concludes that he is not the Brain Surgeon, just a killer.
Back at the station, a drunk Debra shows up and tells Quinn that she killed LaGuerta. He takes her to the interrogation room but disconnects the microphone and talks to her alone. Debra attempts to tell him the story, but Quinn just thinks that Debra feels guilty. After Deb insists, Quinn tells her to write everything that she remembers about that night.
Vogel and Dexter arrive to the interrogation room and Dex tranquilizes a panicked Debra. They take her back home and Dex begins to blame himself. He tells Vogel that she might be right and he can’t help her, letting Vogel take over to assist his sister.
Dex realizes that he is perfect, as Vogel said, but only at one thing – and with that, he goes on to kill the suspect that had human parts in his home.
