There are changes at the TODAY Show. And one, the long term on-air leader Matt Lauer discussed, is the distinction we can expect on the show moving forward.
He talked about the mission statement of TODAY using relevance as the standard for stories put on the air, “and that’s much different from buzzy.” he said.
Actually, we are, as a society, starving because “Buzzy” is simply sugar with whipped cream on top. There is no protein, no healthy whole thoughts to nourish our brains and bodies.
We are given pictures of Putin, shirtless (buzzy) without any real info about where he stands on important issues (relevance).
We see Dina Lohan dressed to the nines in a photo while she was caught driving under the influence and her lawyer makes cracks about her being “parent-trapped”, whatever the heck that is supposed to mean (buzzy) while what we need is good conversation about alcohol responsibility (relevant).
Lately there are pictures of those who were the “oldest living” people who died at the truly ripe old ages of 112 and 109 years of age (buzzy) while what we should be discussing is what makes a life well lived regardless of chronological numbers (relevant).
So, here is to Matt Lauer and the team at TODAY. The big question is “will relevance sell in a society addicted to sugar and whipped cream?”
