On last night’s episode of “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” Guy Fieri took the red Camaro to different parts of Los Angeles, Calif. While there, he found a few friends and some awesome food.
In the Echo Park neighborhood, Guy went to “The Park’s Finest” for barbeque with a Philippine flair. Johneric Concordia was catering in the area for years, and finally opened his own restaurant. As Guy watched him make his special tri-tip, he first mixed several whole spices in the blender. First, he sprinkles it with pink Himalayan salt then rubs it with the spice mixture. Into the smoker it went for five to six hours. Then it is sliced thin and served with horseradish and a vinegar sauce. To add to the enjoyment of this great food, four friends dropped in to meet Guy. The cast of “Grownups 2” stopped in for a meal; Chris Rock, David Spade, Kevin James and Adam Sandler joined Guy for lunch. Bibingka, a Philippine cornbread is another specialty that Guy watched being made. Chris Rock said that it was the best “fat black lady cornbread” he ever had. For the grand finale, Johneric made Mama Leah’s Coconut Beef, named after his mother. She took care of thirteen people in a three-bedroom apartment and fed them this version of Philippine comfort food over rice. They took this gigantic piece of chuck to the outdoor smoker to cook for sixteen hours. When it was done, they cubed it and next cooked it in a giant pan with peppers, coconut cream, and an array of spices. After an hour, they added cane vinegar, then into the smoker until done. When finished it resembled clam chowder, but with beef cubes. After chowing down the five headed to another spot with Adam Sandler driving, he stalled out the Camaro as the gang laughed and joked.
In Victor Heights, they invaded the “Eastside Market Italian Deli.” This place has been around since 1929 when the area was L.A.’s Little Italy. Vito Angiuli, a co-owner, showed the gang how they grind the meat and mix up the best meatballs in town. After taking turns mixing the giant concoction, they formed them into balls and baked them. Then they added them to their famous sauce. Then they made Italian roast beef; another ingredient in their famous sandwich, the D.A. Special that contains, meatballs, roast beef, sausage and pastrami, covered in sauce with cheese. Each one of them had a whole sandwich and savored every bite. Then Guy called for a challenge. The guys had to make a meatball, and Vito would be the judge. The team of Chris Rock and David Spade won the challenge because they put Fritos in their meatballs.
If you cannot hop in the red Camaro with Guy, tune in, and maybe he will be coming to a place near you on “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.”
