Disney and Pixar’s “Monsters University” is the story of how Mike Wazowski(Billy Crystal) and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan(John Goodman) from “Monsters, Inc.” (2001) met and became best friends. Growing up in Monstropolis the two both dreamed of going to Monsters University as scare majors. Mike Wazowski has worked hard studying to get in to the school and to overcome his lack of naturally being scary. Sulley on the other hand, expects things to be easy because he comes from a family of scarers and has a large menacing look. When the two first meet they don’t get along and Mike Wazowski resents Sulley’s arrogance. Regardless of natural ability and effort studying, both monsters end up flunking out of the program. In an effort to get back in to the school the two team up along with the rest of the Oozma Kappa fraternity to compete in the annual Scare Games. As Oozma Kappa advances in the competition the rivalry between Mike Wazowski and Sulley begins to fade and turn into a friendship.
While this movie is a prequel to Disney and Pixar’s “Monster, Inc.” it is not required viewing to understand or enjoy this movie. Fans of the original movie will like “Monsters University” and will appreciate how it lays the foundation for “Monsters, Inc.” showing not only how Mike Wazowski and Sulley’s friendship begins but also the start of their feud with Randall “Randy” Boggs(Steve Buscemi )the villain in the latter film.
Part of the fun in watching “Monsters University” is trying to recognize the many actors and actresses who voiced the supporting characters. The cast is robust and varied featuring Charlie Day(It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Helen Mirren(The Queen), Nathan Fillion(Castle), John Krasinski(The Office), Bill Hader(Saturday Night Live), John Ratzenberger(Cheers), as well as many others.
Disney and Pixar’s “Monsters University” is a fun movie. There are some funny scenes and a few heartwarming moments but overall the emotional impact of the film is not as strong as “Monster, Inc.” but the film is still very enjoyable.
Disney and Pixar’s “Monsters University” will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray October 29th.
