“Good Luck Charlie” may be coming to an end, but it’s making headlines for an entirely different reason. According to reports that began yesterday, the Disney Channel favorite is set to air an upcoming episode in its fourth and final season that will feature a same-sex couple. Amy (Leigh-Allyn Baker) and Bob Duncan(Eric Allen Kramer) will take their young daughter Charlie (Mia Talerico) on a play date with a child that has two moms. One of the moms will become chatty with Amy, while the other is stuck listening to Bob’s stories.
“This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors,” a Disney Channel spokesperson stated. “Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness.”
Now before anyone gets their you-know-whats in a twist, this is actually a B-storyline, with the main action focusing on Teddy (Bridgit Mendler) as she says good-bye to her friend Ivy. The couple is also only slated to appear in one episode.
Disney isn’t saying that they want to push any type of agenda on people; they just want to reflect the times we live in. That’s actually a good thing, especially for kids with same-sex parents who don’t have any positive images to turn to. So before you head out and proclaim that you’ll never watch Disney again, you might want to wait until the episode airs to see if there was really anything to scream about.
Now for the more important question: Since the roles have not been cast, who would you want to play the couple? My money is on Ellen and Portia.
