Most of us have had dreams for our lives since we were children. Some have been accomplished. Some are still in process. Others seem a bit distant at the moment.
Denise DeSimone was like anyone else. A singer/songwriter who wanted to achieve success in her chosen field while touching the hearts of those for whom she performed, Denise found herself facing a major challenge in August, 2005, when she was diagnosed with Stage IV throat and neck cancer. Denise was informed that she would never sing again while being treated for cancer. Medical interventions included removing the left side of her neck.
Denise, however, did not lose hope. She claims that she “lives her life expecting miracles to happen” and “continued to keep a song in her heart” throughout the cancer experience. Denise described her personal process of healing as “making friends with cancer” so she could learn all she could from it.
Only 18 months following her initial diagnosis, Denise was singing again. Her performance of the National Anthem at Fenway Park can be viewed in the brief video accompanying this article. Since that time, Denise has been ordained as an interfaith minister, has become a Reiki master, and is certified in several other healing modalities. She is also an author and continues to write and perform her own music.
