On January 2, 2013 the folks at the Melrose and Fairfax blog voted and awarded Snyder best street artist in L.A. for 2012. They write in their blog, “Snyder is a great artist. Snyder is aware of the conversation he is having with other great artists in the history of the world. In fact, Snyder cites Jackson Pollock’s drip technique, Banksy’s stencils, Van Gogh’s palette and texture, Cezanne’s meticulous attention to composition and Warhol’s iconography in contributing to Snyder’s inventing his very own method, the drip stencil technique.”
It was a recent trip to the Melrose/La Brea area of Los Angeles that Doodle Dunnced was spied. You’ll note from the image montage accompanying this article that the image of Doodle Dunnced from Snyder Art’s tumblr from May 25, 2012 shows the work signed by the artist. Your examiner’s photo from April 27, 2013 shows the Snyder name having been painted over making it a bit difficult to track down the genesis of this street art.
Luckily, with some search engine investigating information about the art and the artist responsible for the street art at 7250 Melrose Avenue was detected.
If you enjoy Doodle Dunnced, you most likely will enjoy viewing Snyder Art’s tumblr. It’s nicely put together almost like a scrapbook of the artist’s last couple of years. It’s where you will find quotes Snyder shares along with photos of his art, such as:
- “I seek to establish a relationship with my art and its natural surroundings every time I paint outside.”
- “Whether skateboarding or art, I’ve always felt at home in the streets.”
Snyder Art has had a strong presence in L.A. for years even though his main hang is Carlsbad, Calif. Snyder Art is intimately linked with the organization, Carlsbadcrawl. According to the Melrose and Fairfax article previously referred to, “We hear he has rock star status there, and we are not even half joking.”
According to Snyder Art’s social media interactions, Snyder finished his newest mural, Doodle’s Imagination, May 21, 2013. The mural can be seen live and in person at the Carlsbad Village, the back of T3 and The Village Grille. There is also an open offer until the end of this week (May 25, 2013) to win a limited edition hand drawn illustration of Doodle’s Imagination mural by simply taking a photo of the mural and posting to Instagram (click Instagram for Snyder Art’s) with the following tag: #snyderart. Snyder’s favorite photo wins.
BTW, if you are wondering if a 12 X 9 print of Doodle Dunnced is available for sale, the answer as of this writing is yes. When the 50 limited edition prints are sold, the answer will then be no.
