Why does Egypt matter to the rest of the world?
From out of Africa all of us came, and most took the path from Ethiopia northward along the Red Sea to Egypt. Granted, that was at least 60,000 years ago, yet nonetheless there is affinity between humanity and Egypt one might imagine. As the nation with the largest Islamic population today, it matters.
If humanity in Egypt can turn the corner by grasping that achieving sustainability on the planet is essential to prosperity for all, then there may be hope in the dream. The hope for peace and a good life for all is not entrenched in mythological beliefs. Instead, it is in pursuit of practical means from which Egyptian people once introduced a lesson and direction.
Rock carvings along the Nile and in desert oases from 10,000 BC reveal that people were hunting, gathering and fishing. Then, they began to harvest grain and to grind it into flour. That event was a first step toward sustainability and ensuring food supplies that lasted longer between the harvests.
Then natural climate changes happened and people overgrazed at about 8000 BC. The pastoral lands of Egypt turned into the Sahara desert. People concentrated around the Nile River to continue their agrarian and centralized economy. Some of us felt the pressure, and kept on moving in pursuit of a more sustainable well being.
All through Egypt’s history, there have been wars and struggles with outside conquerors and among various tribes and factions, and that experience is shared everywhere.
Yet, with Egypt’s head start in experience, one might have expected a more mature and stable result at this juncture in history. The history of humanity on the planet hinges on the outcome of Egypt and its neighbors, because when the people there solve the puzzle to sustainable living, the solution is for everyone to learn from.
Every other nation is in the same pursuit. Yet, changing the course of Egypt’s history from perpetual violence and instability to a world treasure of history and experience is based upon the dream that forces will come together to concentrate human enlightenment upon sustainable economics as a strategy for saving humanity from self-destruction.
