Here are results of our hands-on comparison, completed May 29, 2013, that pitched Droid DNA from Verizon against iPhone 5. Droid DNA offers a very fast quad-core processor, large screen and comfortable handset, larger than iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 is Apple’s latest version of the world’s best selling smartphone.
Dimensions: Droid DNA is bigger at 5.55 (H) x 2.78 (W) x 0.38 (D) inches. The iPhone 5 measures 4.87 (H) x 2.31 (W) x 0.30 (D) inches.
Price: Droid DNA and iPhone 5 both cost $199.99 with a new 2-year service commitment from Verizon or another carrier, with free shipping from verizon.com. The full retail price of the DNA is $599.99. Full retail price for the16 GB iPhone is $649. For both phones, with Verizon, the lower $199.99 price comes with an early termination fee of $350 that you’ll owe if you try to get out of the 2-year commitment early. That commitment costs about $70 per month and may be discounted.
Processor: Droid DNA features the Qualcomm 1.5 Gigahertz quad-core processor; Apple’s iPhone 5 uses the Apple A6 microchip.
Memory: Droid DNA offers 16 gigabytes of internal memory which is not expandable. iPhone also offers the 16GB for $199.99; however, iPhone also comes in higher-memory versions at higher prices: $299 for 32 GB and $399 for 64 GB.
Display: Droid DNA sports a 5-inch screen, high definition with 1080 pixels; iPhone 5 features a 4-inch screen, 1136 by 640 pixels.
Operating system: Droid DNA – Android Jelly Bean. iPhone 5 – Apple iOS 6.1.
Battery life: Both get a good day’s work after charging overnight. Droid DNA is rated to provide over 12 hours of usage, or 14 days on standby. The iPhone 5 offers less battery time: 8 to 10 hours of Internet, talk or video usage, and less than 10 days on standby; also, 40 hours of audio usage.

Weight: Droid DNA: 5 ounces; iPhone 5: 3.95 ounces. Difference is not noticeable.
Cameras: Each has an 8 mega pixel rear facing camera. Each has a front facing camera with videoconferencing capability. Both cameras provide video capability up to 1080p.
Mobile hotspot: Droid DNA supports up to 10 devices via mobile hotspot; iPhone may be capable of providing mobile hotspot capability but this is not typically highlighted.
Manufacturer: Droid DNA: HTC. iPhone 5: Apple.
Special features: The newer Droid DNA offers backlighting for photography, one-press continuous photo shooting and support for wireless charging. The iPhone 5 provides a better, more comfortable set of ear buds than were available in earlier iPhones, plus better photo editing than we saw in the past.
Conclusion: The most noticeable differences between Droid DNA are the size, with Droid DNA’s noticeably larger screen and handset, and the operating system. Android provides most if not all the features of Apple iOS now. Apple still operates a little more smoothly.
