“Drop Dead Diva” is returning to Lifetime on June 23 at 9 p.m. ET. For fans of this hit drama, the premiere of season five is only days away.
(Spoilers ahead for those who aren’t up to date!)
The aptly titled season opener “Back From the Dead” picks up where the shocking season four cliffhanger finale left off after Old Jane (previously Heaven-bound, real Jane) pushed the return to Earth button, and instead of returning back into her former body, appeared to enter the body of Owen, who appeared to drop dead of a heart attack after catching his fiancé, new Jane (Deb in Old Jane’s body) kissing Grayson (Deb’s fully committed boyfriend until her death) on what’s supposed to be Owen and Jane/Deb’s wedding day.
In the opener, Lifetime revealed that Owen goes missing and Jane/Deb is on a frantic search to find him. Jane/Deb is also filled in on the fact that Old Jane has returned to Earth and may be in Owen’s body.
Old Jane isn’t the only one coming back to life this season on “Drop Dead Diva.” The show, itself, returned from the dead after being canceled by Lifetime in January only to be resurrected from cancellation a month and a half later.
As reported by Deadline, Lifetime reversed their decision to bring back the show for a fifth season after Sony Pictures TV was able to work out a new financial model for the solid performing show. Ratings-wise, season four averaged consistently over 2 million viewers in Live+Same Day.
“Drop Dead Diva” creator Josh Berman credits the show’s loyal fans for the reason behind the renewal. In an interview with TVLINE, he stated,
“I believe the fans saved the show. When we were cancelled, we trended on Twitter, off and on, for days. Tens of thousands of fans signed petitions for the show to be brought back. Our Facebook numbers grew, and fans posted homemade videos on YouTube in support of ‘Drop Dead Diva.’ I received thousands of messages of support from around the world. I’ve been fortunate enough to work on several popular shows, including ‘CSI’ and ‘Bones,’ but the fan base for ‘Drop Dead Diva’ is nothing like I’ve ever seen. I’m grateful for such loyal fans.”
Berman confirmed to TVLINE, “There is some creative financing, but that won’t affect the viewing experience. Fans shouldn’t notice a difference.”
One change will be the absence of Josh Stamberg as law firm managing partner Jay Parker, according to THEWRAP, despite the reveal during the finale of season four that “Drop Dead Diva” character Kim Kaswell is carrying his child.
“Drop Dead Diva” stars Brooke Elliot, Margaret Cho, April Bowlby, Jackson Hurst, Kate Levering, Lex Medlin and newcomer Justin Deely as Jane’s new guardian angel, Paul.
