This past weekend, the nation’s largest design event offered a full host of discussions, demonstrations, home tours and a diverse array of exhibits covering every aspect of the modern lifestyle. A major boon for Los Angeles’ economy, attendance this year was up over 12% from last year. Combined with Dwell on Design week, almost 35,000 visitors experienced an entire series of events, parties and a huge exhibition floor.
Clearly a show for progressive thinkers and creative minds, it was opportune this year to create a new award for leading modern designers. The inaugural “Vision Award” will select three finalists, to be announced this fall. Finalists then will be flown to New York at a VIP awards celebration, there the winner will be announced. The award is being presented in cooperation with the Big Ass Fan Company. Dwell is accepting submissions until August 30, 2013 for projects completed in 2012. See details here: http://www.dwell.com/visionawards.
A highlight of the show, you could actually touch and feel, included prefab structures or “homes” outfitted with colorful products from JC Penney’s designer collections by Michael Graves, Sir Terence Conrad, and Jonathan Adler. Renowned architect, Graves – was the keynote speaker of the show, who shared his insights on universal design and design’s direct influence on the quality of life.
Other notable speakers included: fashion designer Trina Turk, actor Bryan Cranston, whose sustainable home is featured in the most recent issue of Dwell; AirBnB Co-Founder Joe Gebbia; and Life Edited founder Graham Hill. Google Glass also gave a first ever demonstration of their new wearable device. Interior designer and reality TV star Jeff Lewis was on-hand promoting his new paint line and filming the next season of Bravo TV’s Flipping Out. Finally, a swanky gala for the ASID Design Awards drew over 400 designers and design lovers from around the world at the Millennium Biltmore downtown.
The Lincoln Motor Company was the Presenting Auto sponsor and Industry Partner was The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). The event was produced by Dwell Media. Catch them in July at Dwell Home in Venice.
