Every year there always seems to two movies that get released that are very similar to each other. In 1998 Hollywood released “Deep Impact” and “Armageddon” which were both about huge asteroids destroying earth. 2006 was the year of the magic and we were given “The Illusionist” and “The Prestige”. This year we were given “White House Down” and “Olympus Has Fallen” which both focus on a group of people taking over The White House. I waited until they were both released to watch them both back to back and find out which one wins the battle for The White House.
“Olympus Has Fallen” starts in winter at Camp David. The president and his family are getting ready to go back to DC for Christmas. On their way back, something hits the windshield of the lead vehicle and causes it to go off an icy bridge. The Presidents limo starts to spin and gets half way on and half way off the bridge. The secret service manages to save the president but can’t save the first lady. This causes the President to move the head of the secret service because he couldn’t save his wife.
Fast forward a few months in the future and the South Korean Prime Minister arrive at the White House. Instantly the terrorist group takes over the White House. We find out that the group wants the US to move their troops out of South Korea so that North Korea can take over. The leader of the terrorist, Kang, attempts to get the launch codes from the President and the staff that made it down with him to his bunker. The secret service man that was moved makes his way back into the White House to try and save the day.
“White House Down” starts with a man who is in charge of the Speaker of the House. He picks up his daughter to take her down to the White House for a tour and his job interview for the secret service. After his interview and while they are on tour, the White House is taken over by a group of terrorist. He manages to save the President but his daughter is left inside with the terrorist. We find out later that the group is made up of ex-military and other Americans that have problems with the US. John Cale, the man in charge of the Speaker, has to decide how he is going to protect the President and his daughter.
Though both movies involve a group of people taking over the White House, both have their differences. “Olympus” wants to explode the nukes in their silos here in the US while “Down” wants to shoot them against our enemies all over the world. Other than very few other differences, they are basically the same movie. Both have a kid that becomes the main focus of the film once they are introduced. “White House Down” uses the kid more than “Olympus Has Fallen”.
“Olympus Has Fallen” went with Aaron Eckhart for their president who was basically tied up for the entire movie and didn’t really do anything. “White House Down” went with Jamie Foxx who was one of the central characters in the movie. They both had their heroes, Gerard Butler and Channing Tatum. Overall, I would choose “Olympus Has Fallen” over “White House Down” for being more serious.
