Thanks to YouTube, music is everywhere. There are millions of people remaking well known songs into their own creation and one of those individuals is Krysta Youngs. The singer/songwriter hails from Los Angeles and has been making music her whole life. Her most recent cover of Kacey Musgraves country song “Merry Go Round” caught the attention of the singer and proved that Krysta Youngs is incredibly talented. This Examiner had the opportunity to interview the singer and found out that, not only is she talented, but she is also fun!
Examiner: What gave you the idea to take these songs and make them your own?
Krysta: I moved to LA from Nashville about a year ago and was writing with a bunch of different camps around town. After six months of nonstop writing I decided that I needed a creative outlet to express myself as an artist. I love to play dress up, make videos and sing and my YouTube channel allows me to do all three :)
Examiner: Two of your stand-out covers are “Thrift Shop” and “Merry Go Round” How do you pick the songs that you cover?
Krysta: I only pick songs that I LOVE and that resonate with me as an artist! It doesn’t matter if it’s #1 on the Billboard charts or a song that no one has ever heard. The only thing I’m concerned with is making sure that my version touches people’s hearts.
Examiner: Kacey Musgraves actually watched your cover and called it “her favorite cover” of her song. How did that make you feel?
Krysta: I’m not going to lie, it was AWESOME! I’m a huge Kacey Musgraves fan. When I lived in Nashville I used to watch her play. She has this bedazzled capo and guitar strap and I thought it was so dope! She’s great. I couldn’t have asked for a better compliment!
Examiner: Aside from your covers, you also write and perform your own songs. How would you describe your musical style and who are your musical influences?
Krysta: I do! I’m a songwriter, a singer, an eyelash rocker and I write pop music for myself and for other artists. Top 40 radio has always been my biggest influence but I also love FASHION, ART, Stevie Nicks, Madonna, Kimbra, 2pac and now Macklemore, 90’s grunge, 40’s music, Nashville songwriting, Taylor Swift, Diane Warren and of course Kacey Musgraves. I collect bits and pieces from everyone and everything in life. I’m a collector and what you see and hear in my music is my collection.
Examiner: Is there a particular song that you plan on covering next or are you working on something original for your next release?
Krysta: I’m starting to work on my EP which I’m really excited about. I have a team of extremely talented friends that are going to lend me some of their creativity! In the meantime, I’ll keep posting covers. I haven’t decided what song to do next but I’m definitely open to suggestions.
Examiner: If you weren’t singing, what would you be doing?
Krysta: Crying ;)
It is amazing to see people like Krysta Youngs using YouTube to introduce the world to their songs. To check out Krysta’s work, follow her on Twitter or visit her YouTube channel (you won’t be disappointed!)
