On May 2, Lori Porter, an independent rescuer, received a call from a fellow rescuer about a family in desperate need of help in Bakersfield, Calif.
The family consists of a couple and their three-year-old dog, “Rootbeer.”
The family fell on hard times when Rootbeer’s human “mom” lost her job six months ago; things deteriorated further when his “dad” lost his just a few months later.
For years the three had lived together, enjoying a happy life, but things took a dramatic turn for the worse when the loss of income resulted in the loss of the family’s home.
Though they searched for a new place to live, their options were few, especially with their beloved pit bull in tow.
Unwilling to give up on the dog which they had loved since he was a small puppy, Rootbeer’s dad made the difficult decision to take up residence with his dog in a car.
Suffice to say, the entire situation has been difficult for everyone.
When Porter heard the story, she decided that she had to do something to help; especially in light of the devotion which had been shown to Rootbeer – a loyalty seldom seen anymore.
Porter created a special Facebook page, “Help Rootbeer and his family,” in an effort to raise funds to enable Rootbeer to go to boarding so that his guardians could search for employment without having to worry about their companion.
Porter shared the following about the request for donations for this family, explaining:
They are asking for a hand up NOT a hand out in helping to save Rootbeer.
Upon learning of the family’s situation, Cowens Pet Resort offered to take Rootbeer in at their facility at a special discounted rate of just $10 a day.
Though Rootbeer is less than thrilled at being separated from his guardians, the couple is able to visit him daily, and the boarding facility is dedicated to helping him with his transition.
Knowing that Rootbeer is safe has provided his guardians with peace of mind and a chance to get back on their feet.
Many people who have learned about this family’s plight have shared the same sentiment, “this could happen to any one of us.”
Please “like” Rootbeer’s Facebook page here.
Donations can be mailed to: Cowens Pet Resort 22110, Stockdale Hwy Bakersfield, CA 93314, phone: (661) 589-3441
Please put in the memo line that it is for ROOTBEER.
