“Fatal Honeymoon,” is based on the true story of Tina Watson and her husband Gabe Watson. The movie is told from the point of view of Tina Watson’s father. It premiered on Lifetime in 2012 starring Amber Clayton and Harvey Keitel.
The movie is about a newly married couple who spends their honeymoon in Australia. When the two go on a scuba diving trip, the wife ends up dead at the bottom of the ocean.
The real case actually happened in Queensland, Australia, at the Yongala wreck Great Barrier Reef Townsville.
According to court records, Tina Watson was married for just 11 days before she died. Prosecutor’s say that her husband, Gabe Watson, murdered her for the insurance money.
Family members say that Tina thought that she had met her knight in shining armor when she met David Gabriel Watson at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. No one would have ever suspected him to have committed such a crime.
Both Tina and Gabe had taken diving lessons, with Gabe being the more experienced one.
The family was in shock that Gabe left her at the bottom of the Barrier Reef. Gabe’s version is that all of a sudden he noticed that his wife was struggling, and when he tried to assist, she knocked off his mask. After trying to put his own mask back on, he noticed that she was already sinking to the bottom of the ocean floor.
A fellow diver named Gary Stempler snapped some photos of Gabe but when he developed the film he was shocked to see Tina’s lifeless body in the background on the ocean floor.
The police investigation revealed that Tina Watson’s air tank was full of air and no other problems with the equipment were found. The initial examination concluded that Tina’s death was due to drowning.
It took Australian authorities years to gather enough evidence to bring Gabe to trial in Australia. Court documents revealed that Gabe Watson pleaded not guilty and was subsequently convicted of manslaughter. He was sentenced to four years in prison but served only 18 months, according to the Austin Examiner.
During the time he was in Australia, Tina Watson’s father was doing everything in his power to make sure that Alabama authorities charged Gabe with murder.
In 2012, Watson stood trial in Alabama on two counts of murder. An Alabama judge acquitted him in February of 2012 for lack of evidence, according to The Birmingham News.
Gabe Watson, is now remarried and living his life in Alabama.
“Fatal Honeymoon” is one of Lifetime Network’s most watched movies.
