According to a July 28 article from ESPN, UFC champ Ronda Rousey insulted WMMA pioneer Marloes Coenen by referring to her as a “random chick.”
Coenen is a well-respected WMMA pioneer who has been fighting since 2000, but that didn’t stop Rousey from discounting her as nothing more than a “random chick” during her ESPN interview.
Rousey didn’t seem to be all that impressed by Cris Santos’ victory over Coenen at Invicta FC 6, as it took “Cyborg” more than 15 minutes to get the finish.
Killing two birds with one stone, Rousey ripped into both Santos and Coenen in one fell swoop.
“I have a lot of things going on,” Rousey said of why she isn’t concerned about Santos. “She’s fighting random chicks. I mean, Marloes — it took her longer and more energy to beat Marloes [Coenen] than it took Miesha (in July 2011).
“It’s only the MMA diehards that want to see that fight. I have so many things going on. If she really wants to make that fight happen, I’m here.”
In all likelihood, Rousey wasn’t purposely taking a verbal jab at Coenen. She was probably just trying to explain her opinion that “Cyborg” isn’t as impressive as she was back in her heyday.
It’s also possible that the “random chick” comment was meant for Santos’ upcoming Muay Thai opponents in Thailand, French kickboxer Angelique Pitiot and Italy’s Annalisa Bucci.
Even so, Coenen was not at all pleased by Rousey’s comments, as she took to Twitter to express her displeasure.
“Wait til’ she gets punched in the face,” Coenen said of Rousey. “No problem doing that.”
As for UFC boss Dana White, he doesn’t seem to know what’s going on with Santos these days.
“I have not heard from her manager,” White said of the Invicta FC champ. “I have not seen any press conferences. So, I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going on with Cyborg.”
